All, You guys are killing me!! I remember US numbers with stuff like GReenfield 2-3847, and my Grandmother, who lived in the country in the South had a party line. The first time we moved to England, if you wanted to call relatives in the States first you had to ring up the overseas operator, give her the number, and then when the call went through, she rang you back. Our phone number in the village of Cheam was only four or five numbers long! Our house at 41 Nonsuch Walk was heated by a combination coal/coke/steam system........and it was my job to get up at 0430 to start the fire in the boiler warm it up... First the coal, then the coke when the fire got hot enough, then turn on the valve in the output once the needle came off the rest. Pretty soon, you couldn't see your breath anymore, and everyone else got up. The bus to school at the base came at 0600, stopping only up the road, so you had to wake up quickly. No whining tolerated. In fact, far less whinging all around.... The second time we moved there in the mid '60's after a short stint in the US we had "mod cons"! I am glad that no one took offense at the questionnaire. I am enjoying the responses! Best, Ray

Later on, we got an unlisted number trying to avoid the telemarketers selling guns and whiskey.

That's LUXURY, that is! Here in Oregon, it rains so much we can't have fire. We have to train spotted owls to carry our messages, and the recipients always eat the owls, so we never get answers. Sometimes we go for years without hearing from anyone. Sam
