In the interest of accuracy the bar at the front that protects the chassis is called a bumper in England. Fenders protect the sides of boats or stop the hot coals from rolling onto the carpet for those of us that still heat our old houses with open fires. Re: TC exu bumpers (fenders)
I'm no expert on exu TCs but all the pictures I've seen of the exu TCs leaving British docks show no bumpers (fenders?) fitted. I always assumed the US dealers fitted locally sourced bumpers for the USA market. Possibly later the MGY type ones were imported when they became available. The book MG Log by Peter Haynes has a couple of pictures of USA bound TCs with no bumpers. Hmmmm. I'd have to dig around to verify, but I'm pretty certain that in old (pre-war, early post-war) British car manuals what we call a "bumper" here in the US was referred to as a "fender". Most of my knowledge (or lack thereof) of British automotive terminology is from those old manuals, so is quite likely way out of date. A lot of American English automotive terminology has replaced the old Britrish terminology in British English in recent years. Is this an example? Is this important? Does it matter? I am also no expert on the EXU TC's. How do we know the TC's in the
pictures indicated below were 1949 EXU models? I realize some TC's
were made as export models (vs home models) without bumpers but were
the 1949 EXU models specific just for the colonies and with bumpers?

That was true of TCs exported to the US from 1945 through most of 1948. In late 1948, to meet a combination of customer demand and local motor vehicle regulations, the EXU model began shipping to the US. In addition to the bumpers, it had 7 inch sealed beam headlamps, two tank-mounted tail lamps instead of the normal single D-lamp, turn signals (double-filament bulbs in the tail lamps and front wing lamps, switch mounted on instrument panel in place of the inspection lamp sockets, relay mounted on back of firewall), no fog lamp, and a host of other more minor differences). In the days after new TCs were still fresh in people's minds, but before they became popular among collectors in the late 1970's, a lot of EXUs were "restored" back to what was often thought to be original configuration - meaning the more familiar bumperless (etc) configuration. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. Yes, with bumpers. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. TC TC6710 XPAG7430 NEMGTR #2271 Cub Hill, Maryland 1962 Triumph TR4 CT3154LO CT3479E fold@bcpl.net> ...and with bumpers?

Re: TC exu bumpers (fenders)
As an owner of an EXU, here is what I know:
There were very few EXU's made, I think 496. They had some mods specifically
for export to the US, mainly:
chrome bumpers, front and rear. The rear had the center cast MG medallion
with red painted background and high, center mounted tag holder. Bumpers
similar to the TD but different.
Turn signals were fitted, ie flashing directionals in the front wing lamps,
and high, tank mounted bullet lamps in the rear. No D-lamp. TD type
headlamps.
Horns were twin, under bonnet TD style. No SFT462 driving light on the badge
bar (and no horn there, either, obviously)...
Any others?

Re: TC exu bumpers (fenders)
Agree. Mine went to Trinidad first and has never had bumpers. Clutters up
the look, I think. In front, the tires hit first and are rubber. When I was
rear-ended in August no amount of rear protection would have helped. The car
following went over where a bumper would be and pushed the spare into the
fuel tank. This required a new tank and wheel.

RE: [mg-tabc] TC exu bumpers (fenders)
If they were guitars, it should be
Fender vs. Gibson
and not
fenders vs. bumpers!
I own all: Fender, Gibson, bumpers ...
But none of them has to do with my TC.
