<><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><> Larry, That sounds like it could be a plugged main jet or a torn diaphragm. The carb float bowl can be removed and cleaned but you might be able to get the same results by draining the bowl using the drain screw on the right side of the bowl. If you are going to remove the bowl to try to clean the jets loosen the choke lever at the bars and slide the cable closer to the carb. Then gently rotate the carb top to left and bottom to right. Do not, I say again, Do NOT get rough with the rotation as it's easy to break the plastic choke fitting on the left side of the carb. It will not be easy to remove this for the carb rotation and removal isn't needed for access to the float bowl screws. Sorry I don't remember the wrench sizes needed or the screwdrivers. I'm pretty sure it's phillips screws on the float bowl and a small 3/16" or 1/4" flat bladed screwdriver for the idle jet. Also be careful of parts falling out when you remove the main jet. It's worth paying attention before hand as the carb won't work correctly if the parts are missing or installed in the incorrect order. Might be worth bringing an old sheet or something similar to put under the bike incase you drop a part. Easier to find on a sheet than in the grass or gravel of a driveway. To check the diaphragm it's under the black plastic cover on the top of the carb. I think you can check it with the carb still installed. Be careful again removing the cover that you watch the orientation of all parts. The diaphragm is on the top of the slide and is one assembly. Check it for tears. If it's got a hole in it the slide won't rise and that prevents the needle from rising in the needle jet so you don't get more fuel as needed. The main jet passes fuel to the needle jet so if it's clogged the fuel won't get through either. I doubt it's a spark plug issue. There is a fine screen filter on the pick up straws attached to the pet cocks. Not removable without damage usually. An in line filter could be added if you'd like. My suggestion is a sintered bronze filter in a vertical position immediately after the petcock. Hope this is helpful. help
Larry,
It sounds like a fuel problem rather than the spark plug. There's no fuel filter, but the petcock does have a strainer of sorts inside the fuel tank. You can disconnect the fuel line at the tank and apply a vacuum to the vacuum port on the valve with your mouth. Fuel should readily flow from the tank. If it doesn't, there's the problem.
You can loosen the carb clamps and rotate the carb so the float bowl is towards the right side of the bike to get at the float bowl screws. Some say you can do this with the fuel tank in place, but I've only done this with the tank removed. You have to disconnect the throttle cables. You may have to slip the choke cable back along the frame to get enough slack to be able to move the carb enough.
Then you can remove the float bowl. With the bowl removed, the float pivot pin can slip out of its bracket, so be careful you don't drop it in the grass! Then you can remove the carb jets. One of them is readily visible, but the other one is recessed and requres a proper size screwdriver to get at.

The bike starts and runs, no unusual noises, but when you give it throttle it dies. I suspect dirt in the carb (is there a factory installed fule filter ? ). I'd like to try to get it going befor I call the local dealer to come pich it up. My question: can I clean the carb by dropping the bowl (remember I'm working on it in the guy's yard) or any other recomendations? If I can ride it home I can do a more thorough job. Part 2: could it be a fouled plug. Start-up is normal, the enging catches right away but if you give it throttle it will rev to about 1400 then die, again no strange noises all is very normal.
Any help apreciated: Thanks much

Either a new hub laced in, or a second-hand wheel, or last option is a Trail-Tech or similar electronic speedo. There was another thread a few months back with similar damage to yours.

Having ridden both in stock form, and both with big bore kits, IMO the DRZ is the better bike. If you find you want less revs at speed with the 5 gears and don t want to lose the slow going ability of your first gear ratio, you can always add a wide ratio gear set to the transmission to give about what a 6th gear would. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5VyQMO9_aU Randy SniperOne From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com]

Thanks John, for the input. I wasn t planning any distant adventures anyway. I was/am learning to ride dirt, and the DRZ400 makes more sense for that. There s a used KLX250 at the local Kawa dealer, 500 miles, about $4365 out the door. A safer bet, but I think it weighs the same as the DRZ, with less power. I d be on asphault on the way to the dirt, so the DRZ makes more sense in that way too. The KLX has that sixth gear though, I m finding differing claims about weight. KLX curb weight seems to be 298; for the DRZ I get dry weights of 249 and 291. I found (purported) gear ratio specs, but I don t really understand them: DRZ: 1st 2.26; 2d 1.73; third 1.38; fourth 1.09; fifth 0.86; final reduction ratio 2.93. KLX: 1st 3.000 (30/10); second 2.000 (30/15); third 1.500 (27/18); fourth 1.250 (25/20); fifth 1.050 (21/20); sixth 0.952 (20/21); final reduction ratio 3.000 (42/14). So, which is spinning slower in top gear? Any tips gratefully appreciated. -JW

Best DRZs engines are in the E-model (DRZ400E) as they have the better cams and the FCR carb. The S model has the Mikuni emission carb and milder cams. The E33 models are CA bikes and are equipped with all the S-model emissions so best to pass on them. None of the Es are street legal stock but can be made so with little expense if that conversion is legal in your jurisdiction. The stock DRZ suspension isn't too bad. The engine was designed (by Yoshimura) to make 45 hp yet remain reliable. S-models are detuned from there so its easy (but expensive) to get that power back. The automatic cam chain tensioner is problematic in earlier (pre 2005?) models, fit a later OEM tensioner or a manual tensioner. It's 50 pounds lighter than the KLR,makes more power and has a better suspension so its a nice addition to the stable. But its no match for the KLR for loaded adventure touring. (was "Stolen A13, Arcata CA") My stolen KLR hasn't turned up. Before it disappeared I was thinking of adding a lighter, more dirt-oriented bike. There are no good KLRs available around here, but there is a 2005 DRZ400, 15k miles, stock except for a rack and Acerbis brushguards. He wants $3500, which seems too much by $500 or so. Anyone have thoughts on these bikes? Thanks- JW
