It's almost time for me to change the tires in my KLR 650. I have clocked in 14,700 miles on the stock tires, I might be able to get about another 2K on the rear and probably another 5K on the front tire. I am thinking about the Metzeler-Tourance tires as the replacement ones.
Has any of you riders tried the Metzeler-Tourance tires ? If so what I would like to know is, since the Metzelers I have seen are tubeless tires, is there a Metzeler-Tourance that is built to take an inner tube ? If the tubeless tires were used with a tube, what size should the tubes be for the front and rear respectively (in other words is tube size differant from the stock tubes ? and is it OK to use inner tubes in a tubeless tire ?) ?
Also another question is has anybody experimented with using a
140/80 - 17 for the rear tire ?. This tire is 10mm wider than the stock 130/80 - 17 rear tire.

While it's usually OK to run tubes in tubeless tires, you might want
to check on the Metzeler web site or call them to make sure it's OK
with that brand. I know that Continental approves the use of tubes
with their tubeless TCK-80's.
You can use the same size tubes as you have in your stock tires. If
the tubes are in good shape, you can use the same tubes. Or buy new
ones and save the old ones as spares.

Follow-up on my possible purchase of a KLR.
I've been thinking of having the dealer take off the original tires in favor of Dunlop, Michelin, or Metzler's for better off road traction.
Would I be out of line to suggest this to my dealer?
Will full knobbies kick out too much on curves?

I agree with Devon. The stock tires are a good way to get used to a dual sport in general and the klr in particular. Bogdan, who knows that life is full of compromises but still hates it. Had to decide between Avon Slipsters - nice ride to Moab, tough going on dirt and slow going on gravel when I get there - or the Taiwanese specials, Kenda 270s - horrid 350 mile ride to Moab and then back but more confidence on the local rides. Chose to mount the Avons this past Saturday. It'll give me an excuse to bullshit more and ride less. I wanted to keep all these subjects separate, so sorry if this is so
many Q's.
The DPO bought the KLR650 for tight trails and consequently sold it.
It now has monster knobbies on it and I am already ready to get a
decent dual purpose tire. 75% street/commuter would be great. Any
suggestions?

I've read a lot about tires on the list recently so I thought I'd ask a
question.
I'll be looking for tires for my new to me A16 soon.
It still has the stock tires on and the rear is wearing quickly and I'm not
pleased with the off road traction.
I've used Maxxis M6006 70/30 dual sport tires previously on an XR350 and
found them to be a good compromise.
Decent traction on the road and decent in the dirt except for mud.
Just inquiring to see if anyone has had experience with these tires on the
KLR or other recommendations.

I had them on my A17 after frying the stocker. I used one on the
rear for Enduraid, and rode all the way to Deals gap and back after
that. I got about 7000 miles out of that tire before putting on
GP110's. Although it howls a lot on the hiway, I think I'll go back
to the c6006 on the rear, and keep the IRC on the front next change.
