long story and a riddle, wheel bearings
About 3 weeks ago, I decided that my KLR needed a new rear tire. I ordered one, and went down to my shop to install it. As soon as I pulled the rear wheel off, I realized that one of the rear wheel bearings was shot. I changed the tire and ordered bearings the next day. The following week, the bearings came in and I took a good look at removing the old bearings. Well, the bearing in the hub closest to the sprocket (not the one in the sprocket carrier) had totally disintegrated, leaving only the outer race in place. This outer race was difficult to remove. I couldn't get at it with a punch from the other side because there was a shoulder in the way. Eventually, I decided that I needed a bearing removal tool and I bought a slide hammer set. Another week or so goes by. (Luckily, I have 3 other motorcycles to ride). Finally, I go down last night with my new slide hammer and pull out the old bearing race. The other two bearings weren't a problem to remove with a punch. Time to install the new bearings. Now, where did I put them? I looked everywhere, on the bench, around the shop, in the truck, in the garage, in the bedroom, the kitchen, the saddlebags, the tankbags. I couldn't find them anywhere! Dang, I guess I'll re-order the bearings and if I find the originals I'll return them. Suddenly, I remembered where I put them. So, the riddle is, where is a sort-of logical place that I put the bearings that would be easy for me to forget, and not obvious to look for? Paul StreeterOn Sep 3, 2014, at 8:39 AM, "pdstreeter@...
