long story and a riddle, wheel bearings

Post by bigburlybaldbeardedbiker » Wed Sep 03, 2014 8:39 am

About 3 weeks ago, I decided that my KLR needed a new rear tire.    I ordered one, and went down to my shop to install it.    As soon as I pulled the rear wheel off, I realized that one of the rear wheel bearings was shot.    I changed the tire and ordered bearings the next day.    The following week, the bearings came in and I took a good look at removing the old bearings.    Well, the bearing in the hub closest to the sprocket (not the one in the sprocket carrier) had totally disintegrated, leaving only the outer race in place.    This outer race was difficult to remove.    I couldn't get at it with a punch from the other side because there was a shoulder in the way.    Eventually, I decided that I needed a bearing removal tool and I bought a slide hammer set.    Another week or so goes by.    (Luckily, I have 3 other motorcycles to ride).    Finally, I go down last night with my new slide hammer and pull out the old bearing race.    The other two bearings weren't a problem to remove with a punch.    Time to install the new bearings.    Now, where did I put them?   I looked everywhere, on the bench, around the shop, in the truck, in the garage, in the bedroom, the kitchen, the saddlebags, the tankbags.    I couldn't find them anywhere!    Dang, I guess I'll re-order the bearings and if I find the originals I'll return them.    Suddenly, I remembered where I put them.     So, the riddle is, where is a sort-of logical place that I put the bearings that would be easy for me to forget, and not obvious to look for? You packed the bearings with grease and when you realized you could not install them at that time you left them in the container of grease?

A hunter came home from a 7-day hunt and complained to his wife that she had not packed extra socks."Honey, I put the extra socks in the gun case."oops. My guess your wife put the new bearing in the gun case, aka as the tool box (in this case. cough). Worse, you left them in the original plastic bag, filled it with trash and sent it to the land fill. hey. You might have loaned them to someone else; I seem to have new wheel bearings.... So the wheel bearing are sitting under the wheel? revmaaatin.

Let's see ..when I play with bearings I put them into a zip lock plastic bag so they don't get in contact with grit, sand or the like. Then I put them next to the tools I used to take things apart and are left out to put all back together. Were they lost among your tools ? Bogdan From: "pdstreeter@...
