An offroad helmet can be tolerable (but not great) on the road with a nose-piece on the goggles, earplugs, and a balaclava for cool weather. The nose-piece is the only thing that will make rain riding comfortable.

I find Judson's comments about the goggle extender/nose piece to be very true for any type of riding. In fact I suggest if/when you buy a helmet, that you buy the goggles and nose piece at the same time to insure that they fit well and comfortably for you. For example, I have a fairly new Bell Moto 6 with Oakley OTG (over the glasses) goggles with an accessory nose piece. No you don't have to wear glasses to use these goggles--many off roaders use them because they are more comfortable and fog less. My goggles and nose piece almost have a custom fit at the chin/jaw guard of the helmet. There is still enough ventilation for hot days but not the direct blast of either hot or cold air. Our Texas .50 cal grasshoppers also can't bean you under the goggles. This nose piece also keeps your nose from getting sunburned. I also like wearing some nice Oakley shades under these goggles, and with a clear lens, when it gets dark I just take the shades off. This can be a big investment, so really try some helmet/goggle combos out so you get a good satisfying fit. This can be a major pain if the two don't mesh well. On the KLR I wearing nothing but an off road helmet. Oh, wait a minute, don't take that wrong...I do wear clothes too. Thad Carey A15 (GI Joe in Barbie drag)

I have an RF900 Shoei, I almost cooked myself wearing it on trails last summer. This year I'm also going to own an MX helmet and goggles. Also, the amount you sweat offroading, if your Shoei doesn't have a removeable liner, I suggest storing it in the garage ;-). MX helmets are all about ventilation. They are noisy, wet and cold in the cold. If you aren't concerned with roost protection the visor and chinpiece gives you, at least look at a flip-front helmet like the Nolan so you have easy access to fresh air. -- ___ ______ _____ __ ________ ___ / _ |< < / == / ___/__ / /_ /_ __/ / __ ____ _ ___ /__ \ / __ |/ // / ****/ (_ / _ \/ __/ / / / _ \/ // / ' \/ _ \ /__/ /_/ |_/_//_/ == \___/\___/\__/ /_/ /_//_/\_,_/_/_/_/ .__/ (_) 8600 miles*Russel Lines*Supertrapp Race* /_/ http://www.panix.com/~cesser/mybike/

Sent from my iPad I picked up a great dual sport helmet yesterday at Cycle Gear. It is a Bilt and similar to my Arai but with one added feature...two visors. A clear one on the outside and a flip down tinted one on the inside (button controlled). Plus it has the sun visor on top like the Arai. Normally it is a $200 helmet but it was on sale for $100. The Arai shell is probably stronger but it cost me $600. Christmas came early. Criswell

I was wondering about that hat. How much wind effect do you get at speed on the visor? I had to use the old electrical tape thing on my visor yesterday riding into the afternoon sun. Andy in Jennings. KLR and Bandit

I will let you know but haven't taken a test ride yet. Will do today. The outside visor seems to seal very well. I have done the electrician tape thing myself but really like the motocross type visor on my Arai. It is vented very well and I ride at speeds of 80 mph or so with no head rip off tendencies. The Bilt seems similar in this respect. Afternoon sun or early morning sun riding into can be really dangerous if you are blinded by the sun. Speaking from experience on that one. I looked at the Bilt DS helmet when they first arrived at the local Cycle Gear. It looked interesting until I noticed Bilt had not designed a moulded-in or attached grasping point at the bottom edge of the face shield to open and close it with. I asked the sales person if there was a hidden lever for opening and closing. He looked and didn't find one either. So, not being a fan of planting a dirty glove across a dusty shield to slide it open/closed, I put the helmet back on the shelf. No lip. Thats a speacial "feature". It is designed for left OR right handed riders. Enclosed in the box, you would have found Two................................. 3inch long peice's of 'DUCT TAPE", to fold over and applie to the edge of the lid. 1 on the right or left for your preferance, OR Both sides if you are ambidextrous. OR Attach them together, and applie right in the center, for a long tab, for use with gloves. I know crazy huh?...they should have just sent a 6 inch peice. Sorry, I want to RIDE, But, it's 38dig and RAINY out in West Michigan, and when I looked at Mountain city Tenessee it wasn't any warmer.

My Arai came with a little lifting nub on the left side that also serves to crack the shield open for foggy conditions, or something. It broke off. The shields are so expensive, that now I just dig into it on the corner with my glove. It's working so far! Robert Wichert P.Eng. I brought that up on the ADV site. A few of the guys who bought the helmet already have said it wasn't really an issue, even with gloves on. I like the dual shield idea. But haven't been able to justify replacing my less than 1 yr old FX39 yet. We'll see. Hope to get over to CG sometime just to check it out. - Bill
