klr 650 stolen then found- need advice

Post by Darren Clark » Wed Nov 09, 2011 5:49 pm

The sub frame might be broken. Take the side panels and seat off, look for cracks in the sub frame or broken bolts. If the sub frame gets pushed down (when it's broken), the muffler which it attached to it can get pushed inward. Darren Clark 2004 KLR-650

Good morning David, I think I would take off the seat and check to see if the sub frame is been tweaked a bit, might just be the angle of the pic you posted but it would explain the loss of clearance between the muffler and tire.....have a great day.....Greg ________________________________ From: david zawadzki To: KLR Group DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Cc: David Z Sent: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 7:22:19 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: KLR 650 stolen then found- need advice Follow up to my "Stolen and then found" earlier post... The sub frame is probably bent. You either need to bend it back, or buy a different one. I've bent one back in the past, so it can be done. The shock looks OK to me, I don't see anything wrong. Paul Streeter [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

In your last picture, the frame tube to the left of the shock might seem to be bent. Try comparing side to side. If it is bent, the other one is also probably bent. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

Looks like your missing a right footpeg bolt. Has this bike been flipped over backwards? The back fender looks a little bit chewed up. This may explain the bent subframe. It looks like the bike has been definitely dropped. I will take off the seat off and inspect the frame. If it's cracked I could probably weld it right? -David Z mobile: 646.267.1109 -please download our free single www.thevanguardband.com

It's probably easier to weld it than to straighten it, IMHO. But both are possible. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

If it were me, I'd strip the entire bike down. Take the seat off the tank off. Get to where you can see the frame, sub-frame engine, radiator. Inspect. Make a parts list and repair/replace damaged parts. The damage looks pretty extensive from the pictures. Hopefully the damage is mostly cosmetic. Good luck, Jim

Hello Gents, So i took the seat/tank off and the frame looks good. No cracks anywhere. I still cant figure out why the muffler is sitting so low. Is that how its supposed to be? Does anyone have a pic of their muffler? 1. Does the metal (extension) on the bolt need to be where it is? Im missing the second screw. https://picasaweb.google.com/104106506894972246961/November12201102?authuser=0&feat=directlink 2. This is the position and spacing between the tire and the muffler right now. Is this really how its supposed to be? I tried to find pics on web but no success. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/RObRBB1xq2a3T8HWoofvDA?feat=directlink 3. I took off the muffler. Does not look bent. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fzLGPDgBZ3kkrOCQrB1_Bw?feat=directlink 4. I looked at the swingarm and shock and it looks ok https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/lG7U4QIBqJQJlWL3UN-TTuqKERlA8QxZ-Vpd7Mm9H-M?feat=directlink 5. Take a look at the bike. can you see anything wrong? https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZRda8rRqOk5jiV9iNrBhfw?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZRda8rRqOk5jiV9iNrBhfw?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tLLHYx-d41rA4OgmwcvIKw?feat=directlink Thanks guys but i dont know what to do, David

klr 650 stolen then found- need advice

You seem to have plenty of clearance between tire and muffler. My130x80 D606 is about the same. A 5.10 K270 will rub on the muffler at less than full compression. Neither can I say that your muffler sits too low v. the tire. Although the angle of the photo makes it a little hard to tell, I would say it rides about as high as mine, which has stock links, but rides pretty tall on a fairly stiff spring. The muffler does not seem to tuck into the notch in the fender as well as mine does. Is the muffler perhaps not slid onto the header pipe as far as it needs to be?
