With the 16T front sprocket, you can run your KLR at 85 mph all day without any problems except traffic, cops, obstacles. I don't understand why anyone would buy an early 08 unless it already had the oil problem fixed. I have seen so many low mile pre-08s CHEAP ON craigslist and on Ebay if you are predisposed to more dirt than street. If you are more street, 09s and 10s are the way to go. A GOOD RUNNING FACTORY ENGINE IS BETTER/EASIER THAN INSTALLING THE 685 KIT. GOOD USED ENGINES ESP. PRE-08 ARE WIDELY AVAILABLE TOO FOR ABOUT THE SAME PRICE AND FAR LESS HASSLE. Remember, there is a winter discount on used KLRs and parts now. Jeffrey #3 I don't think the KLR was ever designed to run at 85 mph for long distances........ Oil burner? Under the conditions described, why should we be surprised at the historical, verifiable outcome? My bike(s) burn little/no oil at 5K rpm. They all 'lose' oil at 5.5/6K+ rpms when run for sustained time/distance. revmaaatin.> > Not necessarily. A friend put the 685 on his and it still burns oil. Seems like he said a quart every 1000 miles. He is fixing to pull it apart again. He is very experienced rebuilding engines so I don't think his work is the problem. Seems like he said this is at running it at 85 mph for long distances. > > Criswell

Stupid things and motorcycles are like ice cream and an Oreo cookie. Besides, if you don't ride the KLR underwater, how is it ever going to get washed? da Vermonster (who consistently rides at 85+mph with 14/45 gearing and regularly submerges the beast up to the the top of the rear wheel. The only thing stupid about it is not checking the oil levels after high speed runs, and trying to start the thing when it's still under water.
