popping on decell.......
Dulcinea, my A13 KLR650 has recently started popping on decelleration. It hasn't done this in years, not since I set the idle screw two turns out. A week ago I set it to three turns out and the popping stopped, but has started popping again after 50 or so miles. I also cleaned out the carb and emptied the IMS tank and refilled it with fresh fuel.
Anyone know what might be causing the popping? Would a leaky diaphragm do this? The bike runs well otherwise and gives ~52 mpg, uses no oil.
I am thinking maybe this junk alcohol gas may be the culprit? My DR350SEX started popping on decell a month ago, too. ??? Anyone else experience this? It's just annoying and the bike seems to run a little hotter.
Thanks.

It could be a leak in the exhaust system, most likely at the header flange, but could be a mid-pipe joint as well. There is a copper crush gasket at the exhaust flange that has been the culprit for others. On an A13, it's likely a good choice to replace it. Sometimes, just tightening the nuts on that flange will stop the problem. A leaky diaphragm would probably cause other symptoms besides just popping, though anything is possible. da Vermonster> > Dulcinea, my A13 KLR650 has recently started popping on decelleration. My A18 pops during decel, it did it a little bit
last year, more so this year. Nothing that
worries me, but something I notice.
People riding with me can hear it, too.
I use Seafoam liberally already.
Bike runs fine otherwise, and gas mileage
is the same. No apparent power loss.

What the others said, check for an air leak in the exhaust tract, make
sure the pilot circuit is absolutely spotless. Even make sure the air
filter is clean and not overoiled, though I would doubt that issue is
causing this.
Once the easy stuff is done, check the valve adjustment. It'd be my
next guess.

Thanks much for the recommendations, guys.
Valves are good, just did them in July. Carb is whistle clean. I will check all the exhaust fasteners and then order a new diaphragm for the air valve. Dulcinea has 54K miles on her and probably needs a little help there.
Cheers,
Pat

service checklist xls
Does anyone have a maintenance/service checklist in spreadsheet format?
If so would you send a private e-mail. I have an 09 due for its 1000 mile and would like to have the service person provide written records of tolerances, etc as they check off and complete the items on the required maintence list for that interval.
Replies appreciated.
