Listers, Saw my first 2008 KLR650 today at the post office. It was a guy from Alberta traveling around for 6 weeks. This was the start of week two. Here's my first impression from looking at it and talking with him. It's a sharp looking bike. I don't like the plastic for the kind of riding I do but I was thinking it was pretty good looking. This bike had 4,500+ kms on it and the left side cowling was scrapped pretty well. But it wasn't broken yet. I didn't like the cockpit style for the instrumentation as it really limits where you can put other switches and accessory sockets. I also am a bit wary about push to reset odometers. The forks are for sure a bit beefier but I didn't care for the axle securing system for a use it in the dirt bike. I know it's a proven system but I don't want to need "extra" tools just to pull the wheel. I know I'd have the tools anyway but I just don't want to have to get them out for maintenance. This, like the rest of my comments, are just my personal preferences. The rear swing arm is for sure a different animal. I didn't get a chance to look really closely at the chain adjustment system but it did look different. The clutch cable on this bike was fraying at the clutch lever. The local dealer didn't have a cable. The owner said it was a different part number from earlier years. (Fred, if you're reading this... I gave him contact info for Arrowhead Motor Sports and suggested he contact you about a new cable. His first name is Richard.) Along the same lines... he mentioned he was having problems with his clutch adjustment. I pointed out it might be his cable but it could also be oil related. He was planning on going over 3,000 miles between changes I think and was using some cheaper motorcycle oil. He was going to change it to Rottela 15w/40. I saw him at the NAPA store a few minutes later when I went up there to make sure he was able to get the correct soft washer for the drain plug. He got one but wasn't having any luck until I walked in and told the counter guy they had them and to look in the book. As soon as he got the book opened to the correct page I pointed out what this guy needed. An hour or so later I saw him heading east as I was returning from the airport. I'm guessing he did an oil change at Walmart per my suggestion and was finally getting out of town. I thought it was interesting the pegs have sacrificial tits on them so you can tell when you're getting leaned over real well. I didn't care for that or the brake pedal not being spring loaded. I forgot to look at the shifter although I was right next to it when telling him about the doohickey. The headlight looked pretty neat with the two lights behind one lens. We didn't talk about how well it works. He'd just had the local dealer put a Kenda 761 on the rear and it looked like a nice pavement tire. I suggested he up the pressure from 32 to 36 psi as I'm guessing it has flimsy sidewalls like the K270s. The exhaust header pipe was chromed or at least polished metal. Same for the heat shield on the header pipe. The muffler looks different from the 2007 and earlier models. Best I could tell the sub frame attaching points were the same as for the earlier models but standing in the rain I didn't get a chance to look real closely. This guy really liked the bike although he didn't have much experience to compare it to anything. I'm betting the guys that have one are very happy with it over all. If I was in the market for a bike just a bit more pavement than dirt oriented I would seriously consider the 2008 KLR650 for a new bike. Best, Jeff Saline Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota

IMHO BMW's have issues but the folks who buy them consider it part of the "mystique". The same applies to BMw cages, Audi, and VW. Is there a trend here? The KLR needs a couple of upgrades, then ride it into the sunset. Has anyone truly worn one out? (7 VW's, 1 BMW cage, 2 BMW mc's---and a KLR)

There was an Country song that went: the other mans wife is always sweeter, the grass is much greener on the other side some are lucky, some are not, I'm just happy with what i got So when you find something that makes you happy, stick with it... Great review for only getting a quick look. I think that these will be the best type of reviews of this new model. From folks with KLR experience. I'm interested in seeing one for myself as it does seem to have a few of the upgrades that I would be interested in seeing for myself. As most of my miles are commuting and back country road type this new model sounds just about right. Any one else have any comments on the new model worth sharing? Thanks. I totally agree. I picked up the 2008 model last week in Blue and love the bike but 6 speed, EFI plus clock/T display would have really made it that much better. Maybe for a model face lift version in a few years but this will come will an increase in cost ! --- Russell Scott wrote:

Yes to the 6 speed, pass on the EFI. I like the "keep it simple" carb. voltage is to be measured ini volts, not microvolts IMHO.
