But even though the KLR gets the same mileage as the Prius, it's emitting about twice the pollution. With my KLR, there's a new rear tire to dispose of every 2500 miles vs. 40,000 on my Del Sol. Lot's of factors to consider for the overall impact on the environment. What really gets a chuckle out of me is passing an earth loving hippy driving a 60s Volkswagen bus after making it through the cloud of smoke it's left behind. Ahh ....... the most energy efficient vehicle I have rode is a sailboard (er ......except for when you have to dispose of it). Criswell

Skip the Prius - it is trendy and pricy. By a Honda Civic or an older Toyota Echo or the replacement Toyota Yaris. I bought a clean 2001 Echo in 2003 w/20,500 miles for $6000 OTD of a dealer. Today that same car w/60,000 miles is worth about $8500. My Echo always gets 34-39 MPG (auto trans) and on trip from New Mexico to California w/cruise control at 65mph, I got 46.5 MPG. Not being picky, but when you mentioned that you KLR is emitting twice the pollution of the Prius, I would have to say that the KLR is emitting more like 1000 times the polution of the Prius. I only mention this because car smog reduction has come a long way in the last 20 years. A 1970's car emits literally 1000's of times more pollutants than a new car today. Motorcycles have never been known to be clean air vehicles. I suspect there are some guidelines now (our lean jetting we cry about), but it is nothing like a new car. I can definitely smell the telltale exhaust from my bone stock (except idle screw) KLR. Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I bought a 93 Miata recently with 94000 miles for $3000. It is getting 27 - 30 mph and is a blast to drive. The suburban is staying off active duty except for supply missions and recon. Criswell

LOL! Not to mention that in real life (as vs. in the showroom), the Prius doesn't get 50mpg. More like 40mpg. I.e., worse than the typical KLR. -E

Are you sure you ride a KLR-650? As far as I can tell, chicks merely stare in stunned disbelief when I ride up on my mighty KLR. Of course, the fact that it looks battered and has ugly farkles stuck all over it (like the blue box bolted to the left handlebar that has the switch for my heated grips -- this on a sorta-green bike!) might have soemthing to do with it too... -E
