Extended warranties are generally (not just for KLR650s) a good deal for the merchant and a bad deal for the consumer. This is why they are marketed so agressively. Robert, Change it to a different dealer than all of those I have had dealings with, OK? How many times have I heard from others here, "my mechanic said"the valves don't need adjusting until at least 10K", "don't need adjusting at first service", etc. Oh, that's right, they KNOW better than I do. (in spite of the fact that ALL the times I've helped do valve adjustments after the owner was told that, and the valves NEEDED adjustment). The swingarm and linkage bearings and shafts are always properly lubed, too (see Paul Streeter's post). The balancer system never has a problem. PO bought the warranty on my A17. The rear shock blew out on me at 4000 miles and they replaced it for me at no cost. My biggest complaint was waiting over a week to get my bike back.. I don't know how much the DPO paid for the warrantee but it saved me less than $100 for the replacement forks seals and labor. I bought an extended warranty for my 2003 FZ1 and when i sold it 2 years later it allowed me to get top dollar for my bike since I could tell buyers it was still under mfg warranty that was transferable. I paid $500 for it and sold my bike on ebay for $600 over comparable bikes, so it was a good investment in my situation. I do all my own work and keep careful records but the warranty just gave me peace of mind 'in case' $$ work needed to be done such as major motor repairs. I have heard reports of FZ1 riders with over 100K miles having motors replaced under warranty with no problems getting approval, and those bikes were ridden pretty 'briskly.' So I also got an extended warranty for my '05 KLR650, paid $425 to add 4 years to the one year that comes with the bike, so unlimited mileage for 4 more years doesnt seem like too bad a deal... I dont 'expect' major repairs but you never know..... markII in vegas

Hi, All Just got my extended warranty offer: 24 months for $407 36 months for $517 48 months for $627 I intend to keep it at least a couple of more years. What are your thoughts on the value of this? I am thinking of paying to have the shop do the Doohicky thing before the warranty exprires...how much should they charge me for that plus a valve adjust? Regards, Larry Leach

If (and that's the debatable point) you want the extended warranty, it can be bought cheaper than the prices offered by the dealers. The extended warranty on the KLR650 is probably not a good deal. If you decide to get it you can get the five year Kawasiki Good Times Protection Plan from Fremont Motorsports in Florence, CO for $355 or they usually sell 'em on eBay for $395. Doohickey an hour or two, about the same on the valve adjust.
