Those prices are over 10% of what the KLR is worth. You are betting the KLR is going to grenade and the dealer and Kawasaki are going to cover it. Keep your money in your pocket, unless your dealer relationship is such that they are going to take really good care of you. Even then that is alot of money on a $5k new bike.

I personally would not pay $5 for some dealer shop moron to work on my bike. Yes, I know there are some good mechanics out there. The problem is I'm not willing to risk wading through the morons to find a good one. Besides, you learn as you work on your own. I haven't been to a mechanic in over 25 years. By the way, the price you quoted seems a bit high. When I bought my '06, I remember the salesman offering me the 4 year for something like $350. He told me the Kawi offer would come in the mail in a month or so, and it would be much higher. He was right. Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Larry, I would strongly suggest you save your hard earned money and find a group of fellow KLRistas in the area. Besides group wrenching you may find some friends to ride with and take trips with. Invest some money in tools and do the maintenance yourself. In my area DFW there are many KLRistas and groups that would be more than happy to show you the ropes self wrenching on the KLR. All KLR wrenching is well within the capabilities of a person of mediocre mechanical skills. Heck even I can do the routine maintenance with the assistance of the great online KLR web page resources. Even if a person's mechanical aptitude is lacking the KLR is very forgiving and a good place to learn and practice to increase skills. Food for thought. Many of the dealers in the DFW areas lease shopspace to young mechanics of varied experience levels much like a haircutting place. I have heard and experienced many shop horror stories. Any bike I care about I would never take to one of the local DFW dealers. Even my 13 year old KLR. My however many cents. To add to my previous post. Self wrenching may also pay dividends when on rides or long trips when a KLR or a part may break. There is great peice of mind knowing you can fix anything that may break salvaging your ride or trip. The last long trip I took on the KLR about 2,400 miles into Mexico, I don't recall seeing any Kawasaki dealers. I pipe down now. Obviously I am biased. I have a 1990 and a 1992 that have a combined milage of 44000 miles. Other than regular maintanance that any year KLR would need I have only changed the clutch cables and springs. I ride them 12000 miles a year worry free. I have $3600 into both bikes. that bike is Very fairly priced in my opinion. Bigg B.
