swapping out the rear spring

All, I have researched (via the FAQs) the topic of swapping out the rear spring only. From what I can find, there are 2 popular choices: Eshocks hypercoil / 9" x 2.25" / 450lb spring weight (taken from the FAQs) Progressive / 9" x 2.5" / 500-560lb spring weight / part # 1159-20GT (taken from the FAQs) Progressive confirmed that this same spring is what comes standard on the 420 series shock set-up. But claims the I.D. is 2.35" (FAQs says 2.5") & may not fit the OEM shock. This same spring definately appears to be the same spring DualStar sells, but they don't recommend it (go figure)... 1. What I want to know is will the Progressive 1159-20GT spring fit & work correctly in either inner diameter (I know it's only 1 diameter, but there seems to be some confusion somewhere)? 2. What other info should I know when swapping out the OEM spring for the Progressive (speacers, etc...) assuming it will work? I am 215 & always carry about 25lbs of gear... The late great Jake mentioned he swapped out his spring for a "granite", but I coudn't get any more info prior to his unfortunate passing... Thanks as always! John @ CO

Progressive Suspension also makes another spring rated at 350/450 that may work better for you unless you are going to haul more luggage and/or a passenger. The 500/560 spring is very stiff and works well on bikes that are fully loaded. The slightly larger ID hasn't been a problem with all of the shocks I have sold springs for. You could make a spacer if you like but once the preload is applied to the spring it isn't going to be moving any place soon. Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

Great info & yes, I do plan on some touring with soft luggage... So making a spacer is really not needed then, huh? John

John, I realize I'm not answering your original questions directly here, but you may want to consider as an alternative the new spring that Elden Carl and his crew have created for the KLR650: http://www.multisurfacemotorcycling.com/products.htm If you haven't come across MSM, it's a great site run by a great bunch of dual sport riders. John You may also want to check on a spring being made specifically for the KLR by Eldon Carl at http://www.multisurfacemotorcycling.com/products.htm It is specifically designed to replace the weak stock spring. Doug in NC At 05:58 PM 7/26/2005, you wrote:

Just compare the price with eshocks, because it's the same stuff, no magic here, just springs. I put the 500-560 spring on my bike before I did research into rising links and how they work. Had I not already bought that spring, I'd have just gone with a 500lb straight rate. I'm 260lbs and a combination of LR fork springs with 2.75" spacers and the 500-560 LR spring in the rear I got my sag dialed in nicely. Oh yeah, be very careful with spring compressors if you've never played with springs before. They are NO joke and you can hurt yourself badly if you aren't working carefully.

Well, that's embarassing. Forgot I had installed an accesory fuse kit. Looking at those instead of my running fuses. Duh. Blown fuse.
