hard starting
Every time Ive had that problem a new spark plug fixed it up. Being a single cylinder a good sparky is a must.

Glacier Here's one fer ya! When I start my KiLleR, it will idle poorly (as in weak) then suddenly, like someone threw a switch it idles well. Conditions are cold (relative) 20F or less, choke on. The engine doesn't do it when warm. I'm thinking it may be the automatic compression release sticking and then releasing. Whacha all think bout dat?

If it was the compression release you'd hear a frightening clackity
clack wouldn't you? It could be the choke cable sticking a bit and as
it warms and releases the "switch" goes on... My clutch cable has
been sticking in the cold recently (mostly on those 3-10F days with
sub-zero windchills).

No necessarily. If the CR is sticking it would just suddenly release, if it
were broken, it would most likely clickety clack, or is that tick, tick,
crunch?

I've used this oil exclusively with no prior problems.

hard starting
I've had hard starting with my KTM which still has 15/50 in it as well. I recently changed the oil on my KLR to 5/40 and it doesn't seem to mind the cold. Might be worth a shot since it's cheap and simple to test.

hard starting
I am new to the KLR650 world and new to this group. I could use some
help. The bike is used but seems well cared for. The only problem
this far is hard starting. If I use the choke it will fire but fails
to keep running. I have tried variations of choke and throttle but
nothing works. If I do get it to fire and baby it along until it
warms a little then it runs and restarts just fine. If I get it
running using the choke and touch the throttle to keep it running it
shuts down right away. If I try to start it without the choke I get
nothing. I would think that these things are designed to start fairly
easy or I would have read more about the problem. The bike came with
a jet kit in it. It also came with another entire parts bike (bought
from insurance company after accident). I was having the starting
problems so I switched out carbs for the stock one on the parts bike.
Things didn't change any. perhaps there is a choke adjustment that I
need to know about. Any help would be apprecitated.

hard starting
Assuming nothing else is wrong, you might have the idle speed set a
little bit too low. Try turning up the idle a little.
The bike shouldn't start without the choke (pretty much anywhere much
below 60 deg), this is correct. Either the carb is a little dirty (and
possibly both could be), the idle mixture screw is set a little too
lean, the idle speed is set a little too low, or small amounts of all
three.

You do have fresh gas right ?
get a bottle with hose to supply fuel to the carb or drain the tank.
youll need to apply vacume to the little hose behind the fuel line at
the petcock. drain with the reserve on.
drain the carb at the screw on the bottom side of the carb bowl.
bad gas kicks a** all the time.
