Believe the chart or not, I don't care. If I was going to upload a bogus chart, I would at least give it 50HP. They acutally didn't want to dyno the bike because it was close to 30,000kms at the time and they didn't like the Trailwing on the back which I had installed just for this test. They have a policy of not testing bikes over 30,000kms, I guess they don't want them blowing up. Maybe the KLR looked pretty beat up compared to all the shiny sport bikes. I had to sweet talk them into doing the test because the Trailwing wasn't stamped "For Highway Use" on it. The dyno guys had never done a dirt bike before. I believe the numbers because I saw a few bikes that where putting out what you would expect them to. Some guys where pissed off because their bike where making less than stock. When I bought my A14 it was bone stock with 11,000kms on it. What a disappointment. It was a weasy, whimpy bike. First mod was to open up the airbox (cutpout and screen removed) and do some simple carb changes (pilot screw and shim stock needle). There was an immeadiate improvement. The next step was to get the carb dead on. I built an adapter that would allow me to attach an O2 sensor on the tailpipe. After messing aroung and installing the KLX650 needle, the carb was setup just about perfect, a little on the rich side. The next step was the compression boost through removing the cylinder base gasket and some head work. I immeadiately found the bike ran better. I wants to rev now and really picks up at 4500rpm all the way to redline. The dyno run just confirmed my "seat-of-pants" feel for the cost of $20 and a couple hours hanging out at the performance shop. I can constantly out accelerate stock KLR's, keep up with the XR650's and even beat a BMW GS1100 once in a drag race. The fairy tales are at the Never-Never ranch in Santa Barbara. The reality is sitting in my garage. I guess you don't want to hear about the other mods I did to make the bike handle sandy whoops like an XR400 because that is all fantasy too. Bryan K A14

Considering that the optimum trail bike for the local terrain here is a KTM 250 four-stroke, the lack of power doesn't concern me. But the compression boost waking up the motor is not suprising. Well, Murphy's Law has struck again! I sold my A-17 just prior to moving to Tucson, AZ. Bought a 94 R100M 'Mystic' BMW - I had been looking for one for a long time and found one in perfect shape. Now that I'm in AZ I find that there are a ton of dirt roads, trails, and ghost towns that would be fun to explore. I am looking for an older KLR650 or possibly a KLR250. I see a few out there have the KLR250's and wonder how they are on the freeways and main highways? I won't be going to far on the machine - but a road trip up into Utah is totally possible. So, I am looking for something in the $1500 range as I am semi retired and don't have alot of extra cash. I am keeping an eye on the local paper and cycle adds but have found nothing sofar. I would like to find something in the AZ area - don't want to ship or drive thousands of miles to pick the bike up.
