I'm sure the valves are fine then, but 5,000mi ago would be
2 1/2 years of light usage. Enough time for the gas to go
stale, and start turning into varnish.

20k miles isn't much for a KLR if it's been maintained. Before going
hog wild with a rebuild on a non-oil burner, I'd clean the air
filter, check/adjust the valves, put in a new spark plug, check all
the wiring connections and see where that got me. Might also check to
see that the rear brake pads are dragging too badly and that the
chain isn't too tight.

Well, with 20000 miles, and no visible smoke, I'm going to rule out
valves, guides and rings. Nothing else jumps out on what you've told
us. Is the air filter clean? Is a brake dragging? Has the bike sat
around long enough so you are forgetting what it should feel like?
Would a fresh tank of gas help? Is the carb venting?

Could the need for a valve adjustment cause you to lose alot of power? It was a couple of years ago, and 5000 miles since they were adjusted.

That could mean you paid some guy $150 to dump fuel injector cleaner
in your gas tank and then go smoke a pack of cigarettes, unless you
stumbled upon the 1 honest dealer in 20 out there.

Valves that are too tight may not seal well and will eventually burn.
Not good for power production.

maybe check compression in the cylinder. that'll let you know if any
compression is escaping from the valves/rings. also see if the
compression leaks down within a minute or so. anyone know what the
compression is supposed to be?. if its not burning any oil this is
all prob ok though.

Sorry about the multiple posts.
Usually, valve clearances tighten up over time. The first symptom
is typically a tendency to stumble off idle, or to stall out when
slowing to a stop, and deterioration of the idle. By the time you
notice any power loss, the driveability issues should already have
surfaced. Valves that are way loose can cause a loss of power, but you
should notice the racket long before any power loss.
