hard hot starting? (muther fu%$#r!!)
I have been fighting this since I got the bike a few weeks ago, and it has beaten me into submission. Much more of this I am I going to auction this f%^&^%r on eBay. I refuse to let a stealer look at it on principal.
Bike starts perfectly while cold. Engine catches on first turn. Scary fast. Sometimes (not all the time) the engine will NOT catch after it has been sitting for a few minutes. All the wire wiggling and choking in the world doesnt help. Let it sit until it cools off, and it will catch on the first turn. Any and all ideas appreciated.

So, it just won't start? It will run fine when hot, it's not cutting out, but if you shut it off you can't restart it until it cools?
If the above is true then it's likely not an ignition fault. Sounds like the choke is stuck on, or you have the carb set way too rich.

I had simuliar problems when I had a fuel filter installed. If you
have one, remove it, try again.

Do you mean the starter cranks but the engine won't fire.
Have you checked your valves clearances lately? My A-15 did the exact
same thing, would crank right up cold but upon restart after riding it
would take several stabs at the starter button before she would fire
up. I adjusted my valves and the intakes were pretty tight but now
that problem is gone. Just a thought.

No, No, No.
I am not suggesting that you have left the choke on this whole time. I'm
suggesting that the choke plunger in the carburetor is stuck, and the choke is
on regardless of the lever position.
What year is it?

If the starter doesn't turn over when hot then it may be the silonoid
(spelling?). Don't know if the KLR has one but thats what it would be
if it was a SB Chevy. Did you check the cable to the choke. I think
there is suppose to be 2-3mm play between the cable end cap and the
choke lever seat. Could also be the plunger for the choke is stuck
open inside the carb. Or the cable is fraid inside and holding it
open. maybe the needle and seat are sticking open. How old is the
Bike? When you said it starts and runs scary fast it sounds like the
choke. I think the KLR choke lets more of both air and fuel in. If it
only let more fuel in I dont think it would run fast. So the problem
probably isnt a bad needle + seat.

It is a 2000. I have found a loose connector going to the CDI from the
magneto pickup. Actually, the wires inside the Molex connector were loose. I
have rigged it for now as my good connectors are at work, but it seems to
have solved my problem.
I will know more tomorrow.
Thanks for the tips...
Dave
