oil amount?
Yes.
I like to keep my oil above the sight glass window. On a 500 mile
trip I used up 1/2 quart of oil. If I started out with the oil
somewhere in the sight glass I may have run out of oil (my opinion).
I also have found that any oil lighter then 20w-50 gets used up
faster.

Marc,
Changed my oil last night on my A9 and this is what I
did/saw:
1) Position bike so that it is level.
2) Drain warm oil for a few hours.
3) Remove filter and install new one.
4) Add 2qts 16oz (2.4liters).
5) Run engine for a few minutes and let oil drain back
to sump for an hour.
6) Oil level is slightly above the site glass. Adding
the extra .1 liter to make it 2.5 would make it above
the glass.
The site glass position is correct on my bike.

oil amount?
Brad,
Very, very, very interesting. I do not run the engine after adding oil and before checking theoil level in the sight glass. I have only observed that after I add 2.5 liters the oil level is always above the top of the sight glass. I will try your method. Thanks.

Brad,
The more I think about your excellent report on your oil adding procedure the more questions I start to ask. Since I add oil and watch the sight glass as I fill the crankcase, that implies that as you added your 2.4 liters you (too) saw the oil level go above the sight glass as you were adding oil (but before you ran the engine), correct? That also implies that by running your engine and letting it drain (with the oil filter installed) you were keeping some oil in the oil filter and in the upper engine (probably), correct?
As you were adding oil to the crankcase prior to running the engine, how much oil had you added when the oil reached the top of the sight glass?
If my suspicion that there is a significant quantity of oil held in the filter and the upper portions of the engine after you ran the engine is correct, that implies that the folk who add oil until the oil level reaches the top of the sight glass and stop are not adding enough oil to their crankcase. Your thoughts?

Yes, it went above the site glass while filling.> Brad, > The more I think about your excellent report on > your oil adding procedure the more questions I start > to ask. I have noticed that the oil filter is always empty when I replace it. I guess the only oil held in the filter is what it takes to soak it. And then there is some oil in the routing tubing etc I guess. Do other people see that their oil filter cavity is empty (except for some residual oil of course)?> That also > implies that by running your engine and letting it > drain (with the oil filter installed) you were > keeping some oil in the oil filter and in the upper > engine (probably), correct?
When I added 2qt 16oz the level was slightly above the site glass. Maybe 1/4", I am not sure. After running the engine and waiting, the oil was only slightly less than it was before.> As you were adding oil to the crankcase prior to > running the engine, how much oil had you added when > the oil reached the top of the sight glass?
As long as you run the engine for a while and then make sure it is at the top of the siteglass, I think you are OK.> If my suspicion that there is a significant > quantity of oil held in the filter and the upper > portions of the engine after you ran the engine is > correct, that implies that the folk who add oil > until the oil level reaches the top of the sight > glass and stop are not adding enough oil to their > crankcase. On every bike (and car for that matter) that I have changed oil on,
either you fill the crankcase with the specified quantity of oil and
there you go, OR you fill to the top line on the window (or dipstick),
run the motor for one or two minutes to fill the filter, then check the
oil again and top up. Either way you end up with enough oil.
If the window on the KLR isn't accurate, it's not off by too much.
People who use 2.5l and ignore the window aren't burning oil or puking
it up into the airbox, and people who just use the sightglass aren't
blowing up motors.

Dunno why there's such a debate on this. 2.2l, 2.3l, who cares. As long as
the oil level's somewhere in the sight window when you're done, you're okay.
Right?
When I change my oil I turn the engine over just a little with the starter
them immedietely kill it with the kill switch. I reckon this gets a little
bit more of the old oil out of the engine.
