TC Brake Improvements
To All, If I wanted better brakes on my TC what might I do? I would not want to make any change that could not be remove and the car returned to normal (stock that is). I've heard mention of Alfin brakes and also 240Z brakes. Are these possibilities? Thanks, Bud Bradford TC6761 Bakersville, NC

I am using Alfin drums that I got from Bob Grunau and a soft brake lining with excellent results.

Re: [mg-tabc] TC Brake Improvements
Bud:
This Winter I did new Alfin brake drums from Bob Grunau and new real soft
linings for the shoes, just as Ken mentioned doing. I also took the drums to
the friction company that installed the shoe compound and had the shoes
"shaped" to the drums to assure complete and even contact. There was some
talk a while back about having the shoes "bonded" in place instead of rivets.
However, this is expensive and the process if intened for applications where
there are forces in both directions continually, such as a fork lift that
would loosen or "work" the rivets. I dont see a need for it in this
application. (comment anyone?) And then the best overall improvement is
running the rear brakes without lubrication from gear oil. I went through my
rear axle completely this winter with new crown and pinion, sealed axle
bearings, new tapered axles, and correct fit of the hub to the outer bearing.
Soooo, the damn thing better not leak on my new brakes!

Re: [mg-tabc] TC Brake Improvements
Once upon a time, I was roadracing a Renault R5 (Cup car series).
As I backed up in the paddock, my rear left wheel locked up, but freed
itself once I rolled forward.
Off I went, finished the last lap, and pulled that wheel and drum that very
night.
What did I see, but a loose, "unbonded" shoe, that would wedge itself
inbetween the now bare metal shoe when rolling back, but then centered the
loose shoe back in position when rolling forward.
So if I have a choice, I would rivet and glue....At least if the
manufacturing process is in France!

Re: [mg-tabc] TC Brake Improvements
Bud - I installed 240Z drums prepared by Mike Goodman. Excellent
results at reasonable cost. One word of caution if you do this: when
touring mountainous terraine, choose to be "tail end charlie" or at
least position yourself just ahead of another TC equally equipped, so as
to ensure a minimum of adrenalin expenditure.

Larry:
NO! Look for Bob's listing in either the T-ABC classifieds or suppliers listing. Bob is near Toronto, Canada.
Not only do the Alfins stop better the look great also. Abingdon also sells Alfins, Bob may be the supplier, I don't know, but their price is higher. I would deal directly with Bob. There is no such thing as a new guy, anyone who owns a T-ABC has got to be an old guy except for Awani.

Re: [mg-tabc] TC Brake Improvements
The advantage in not having rivets only comes when the linings wear down!
The cast iron liners are quite soft and would soon get grooved by rivets.
Having said that, I have got rivets inside MY Grunau Alfins, but not the
type of lining which is full of metal particles to aid cooling.
