Ok, folks, one of the persistant questions is: What headlamp is correct for
my car. Lets make a FAQ. I know some of them, help me fill in the blanks:
M------Rotax K701-7inch or Lucas R47A/B( per Blower) or was it Rotax KL590/7

2. Were Lucas lamps used along with the Rotax lamps all through the J
production run? If not when did it start?
**Early cars had Rotax, changed to Lucas for later cars but the parts list
doesn't give a date for the change over! [ frustrating? ]
3. Did the J ever use the dipping reflector set-up? Wiring diagrams never
show it.
**The near side lamp had a 'dipper', the off side did not, that lamp went
'out' for low beam activated by an interlock that was part of the 'dipper'
mechanism. The actual arrangement can be seen on wiring diagrams for the TA.
4. DID the Lucas lamp use a flat lens or was it fluted?
**Flat, sandblasted on one side.[for want of a better discription]
5. With all the Rotax equipment that was specified, why the Lucas 1130 wing
lamps? Didn't Rotax have an equivalent for this?
**Both companies supplied Torpedo sidelamps which were painted body color,
later cars were fitted with the Lucas 1130 lamps, don't know when the
change was made. [ After Rotax went defunct! when? ]

Re: [mg-tabc] Re: TB lights
Hi Guys,
OK!
Careful perusal of my original wiring diagram of the TB shows that the
lights have a single filament bulb in each headlight. They are both focused
straight down the road. When the dipper switch is selected to high beams,
both light are blazing (well, OK, maybe a damp candle...)away; when dipped,
the bulb nearest oncoming traffic goes out(!) leaving the one bulb shining
(glimmering?) down the part of the road nearest the ditch. Of course, there
is no US version.
The TA wiring diagram shows the solenoid type lamp nearest oncoming traffic,
and the diagram for the TC (No. TC 3414 onwards) shows a dual filament lamp
nearest the oncoming traffic, single filament on ditch side.
The US version of the TC has two of the twin filament lights.
Now, the question is: Should I go original, or go with the TC type wiring
for safety? The two harnesses are different in several ways, but I suspect
that they could be interchanged with little trouble. My harness is in,
shall we say, a rather used condition, and also has been modded to allow the
later sealed beam light conversion. I am leaning toward driveability with
the US TC type wiring harness installed, but the TA type would work as well.
Comments??

Re: [mg-tabc] Re: TB lights
My vote is for you to go the way of most enlightenment; i.e. go for the TC
lighting with 2 filaments in both lights, unless you intend to be like M.
Esders, who ordered his Bugatti Royale TOTALLY WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS. Seems he
did not intend to drive after dark, lived in the "City of Lights" ([Paris),
and quite possibly thought that headlights would spoil the lines of the
coachwork!! No joke, a re-creation of his Type 41 is in the Schlumpf Museum
in Mulhouse, France--WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS.

Ray:
For safety there is really no choice here. Go for the TC wiring plus 50 watt
halogen headlights. If the reflectors are not in good condition a re-silvering
will make a world of difference.

TB lights
Ray. I would echo Ken`s comments. I have 7" Halogen Sealed Beams in my TB. I have also converted the electrics to the TC 2 brush system. Now I can see the Hedgehogs and keep the battery charged. Paddy.

If I may quote
"Speed is Life
of course Luck and Attitude
are helpful, too"
. . . and good headlights are essential! When I first had my 46TC it was
fitted with original 'offside light goes out' headlamps, and driving at
night was ##misery##. I changed it to 'double dipping' and drove many
thousands of miles with a smile on my face (well figuratively at least).
Same story with our J2.

Re: [mg-tabc] Re: TB lights
Hi Guys,
Careful with all those watts.. 50 each headlamp plus everything else equals
say 110 watts..Ohms law indicates that equals a constant drain of 9 amps !
The 'normal' charge from the gennie is probably 5 - 8 amps.
Therefore if you do a loooong night drive you will actually flatten the
battery.
It happened to me during a 12 hour/darkness drive during my 'TC Around
Australia ' trip in 1988. I had 2x60 watt headlamps + 45 watt driving lamp
to get me through the longest stretch in the North West of Western
Australia..we did 1400kms (875 miles) that day/night...but flattened the
battery.
Make sure you increase the charge rate of the gennie via the regulator.
Regards
Harry.

Harry:
I agree that 50 watts per light puts a hefty strain on the electrical system.
Most of my night driving is of short duration which gives the battery time to
recover during the next daylight drive. For what it's worth I am using an Optima
battery. I let this battery sit in my car in the cold garage two winters ago
with out running the car at all. The battery still had a full charge after four
months.

Re: [mg-tabc] Re: TB lights
Hi all,
My head lights are still 35/35watt, but are halogen bulbs. So far no battery
drain and the light is astounding. Worth trying?
I assume they generally available, the MG Octagon Car Club UK stock them from
time to time, but I get mine from Andrew Brock, Bulb Supplies, 31A Shawbury
Road, East Dulwich, London, SE22 9DH, UK. They are standard halogens but with
the appropriate bayonet fittings for UK T series but he also provides for
American TCs with their pre-focused 'sealed beam' lights. If you write Andrew
will provide a nice little illustrated brochure. They are in my view
expensive but worth it from the safety and general driving pleasure point of
view. In terms of electrics your car remains 'standard'.
If you want real overkill stay with the 50W but go halogen!
