Re: TC Fuses
Charles you are correct a 35 amp Lucas fuse is rated 17 amp continuous this
is now written on the slip of paper in the fuse, as a close substitute I would
use a 20 amp US type fuse, the 50 amp is rated 25 amp continuous

TC fuses
TC fuses I was asked what fuses to run in the TC that are mounted on the regulator. Cannot seem to find any specs in any books that I have found. Does anyone know the original ratings of the two fuses?
And when you answer, please define if you are referring to British amps or American Amps. Per a Bussman conversion chart I found these figures.
British = American
50 30
35 25
30 20
25 15
20 10
10 7.5
5 3
However a Triumph mechanic thought those were on the high side so suggests:
British = American
50 25
35 20
30 15
25 15
20 10
10 5
5 3
I run American 25 amp in both my slots just because that is what I had umpteen years ago and have never had problems (knock on wood).
Referring to the TC wiring diagram (not EXU), the left fuse only protects the horn. The right fuse protects the wiper, petrol warning lamp, fog light and brake light circuits. So you could drive a TC without either fuse (but would not have a brake lamp). Ignition, headlamps, dash lamps and tail lamps are not fused at all (unless wired differently). I know some TC owners have installed extra fuses to protect other circuits, but did so to satisfy their own desires.

"A pound's a pound the world around." I always reckoned that an amp is an amp. Old man Ohm figured this out years ago.

Re: TC fuses
Amps are amps but I believe that the number on an American fuse indicates the max continuous amperage that the fuse can handle while the British fuse is rated for the maximum momentary surge that it can handle. Therefore essentially identical fuses can have two different ratings depending on where it was made.

Re: TC fuses
Re: [mg-tabc] TC fuses OK, that makes sense, but what values are placed in the two slots on a TC? I have 25 amp fuses (American markings) in both but probably could get by with less.
So how much current does the horn draw, which one fuse protects?
And how much current does the wiper, petrol warning lamp, fog light and brake light circuits draw together, which the other fuse protects?
I could go out and test but, someone out there must know the answer already.

Re: TC fuses
Frank is the closest to being right. Lucas fuses are rated at the continuous fusing rate. Instantaneous fusing rate is slightly higher.
The 35 amp Lucas fuse has a continuous ampere rating of 17.5 and an instantaneous fusing rate of 40 amps. I can't find any verification but I think the 35 amp Lucas fuse is the one for TCs so a 15 amp American fuse would be a reasonable substitute.

Re: TC fuses
Hi Mike,The fuses are there to protect the wires, not the end consumer ( like bulbs ) in our cars.
Have a look at your battery of your car. We normally refer to 40 Amp to 100 Amp. There are some other information on the batteries that are more interesting.

TC Fuses
Hi All,
I am in the process of re-wiring TC7142.
Has anyone any experience of adding additional fuses to give extra protection? If so, which circuits and fuse rating were used?
I could put a fuse box on the back of the tool box where it would be accessible yet out of sight.
Regards
Nick

Been there done that, re the dash sockets ... if ever there was a drama waiting to happen it's with those things. Mine are now just there to fill the holes.

Subject : [mg-tabc] TC Fuses
Hi All,
I am in the process of re-wiring TC7142.
Has anyone any experience of adding additional fuses to give extra protection? If so, which circuits and fuse rating were used?
I could put a fuse box on the back of the tool box where it would be accessible yet out of sight.
