Chip is spot on [as we would expect].

It is the effective compression ratio when supercharged that is important. This should not be higher than about 9.5:1 for most cars. If the boost pressure is say 6 psi, then the un-supercharged compression ratio should not be greater than 8.0:1. For 8 psi blower pressure it will need to be no more than about 7.7:1, and so on.

Taking the case of a blower pressure of 6 psi , the maximum 8.0:1 un-supercharged CR, plus the engine capacity, dictates the minimum head volume which is acceptable. From this, assuming flat-top pistons and a standard head gasket, you can quickly determine what minimum head thickness is required.

It will not be possible to use domed pistons with a blown XPAG.

The deciding factor when fitting a supercharger is not whether or not the
head is late or early, and not whether the pistons are flat or domed.
What matters is what the compression ratio is. Back in the bad old days,
racers trying to get maximum horsepower out of the XPAG ran supercharged
engines with insanely high compression ratios. For a reliable
supercharged street engine you want to keep the compression ratio fairly
low.

This fits in with what I have always adhered to when supercharging.
I was interested in the shape of the chamber specifically because of the
quench zone.
Best,

parts for sale

Post by sculptart@aol.com » Sun Apr 27, 2003 1:03 pm

To all,

I have been talking to Bill Jones of Vintage Sportscars, Ltd. and he is
selling what once was a complete 1948 TC. Everything is in parts from the
previous owner, and Bill is selling the accumulation for the previous owner's
widow. I was able to pick up a couple of useful items, and it is worth a call
to him if you have any needs.

The phone number was listed by Jim on his latest update and here it is again.

Inquire by phone or Fax to: Vintage Sportscars, Ltd
LaGrange, TX
Phone: 979-968-6937
Fax : 979-968-6952
My best to all, lock the garage and update the insurance,
Ben in Colorado.

Parts for sale

Post by Andrew Clayton » Thu Apr 21, 2005 3:23 am

Before I list these parts on Ebay I thought I would do the right thing by the group and offer them here first. Apologies if these are meant to go in the "For Sale" section of the T-ABC web-site but I didn't want them to be sitting there for months with no response. I'm after a fairly quick sale so, if not taken here, they will be listed on Ebay in about 1 weeks time.

Thus, I have for sale the following:-

1. Supercharger - this is a beautifully cast alloy blower with brackets, pulleys and an inlet manifold to fit an XPAG/XPEG engine. I think it's actually an old aircraft cabin blower which has been converted as all the experts I've asked to identify it have been unable to do so. I haven't run it on my car (it's now surplus to requirements) but it turns by hand and gives a really good suck through the inlet port when doing so. As far as I know, it's in excellent condition, but I would have taken it apart to check seals, etc before using it and would advise the buyer to do the same. The pulleys and belt are the wide, toothed variety and, had I wanted to use it in historic racing here, I would have had to change it to a twin V-belt arrangement (which would mean new pulleys). You may or may not have to do this, depending on the use of the car. With the inlet manifold, it bolts straight onto an XPAG/XPEG block and the rear bracket fits to the rear of the head. A new bracket and tensioner for the front would have to be made as I couldn't see how the supplied ones could fit but the buyer may be smarter than me and work it out. It has an oil reservoir and dipstick and fittings for a metered oil supply. It also has a blow-off valve (I don't know what pressure it's set to) and a hole for a boost gauge sensor. You will have to supply your own SU carb and boost gauge. I paid $AUD 2,400 for it and hope to sell it for a similiar amount.

2. Complete XPAG engine - this is the engine currently in my car but which will again become surplus. It is not immediately available but I will be taking it out sometime this (Aus) winter and wanted to offer it in advance to anyone interested. I've never had it apart so I'm not sure of the exact specs but as far as I know it's only 1250cc and fairly standard. It puffs out a bit of black smoke (probably down to my poor carburettor tuning) but doesn't burn any oil at all and shows 50 psi when hot and running at about 3,000 RPM. Compression in each cylinder is around the 120-130 mark. Rumour has it that it was rebuilt by it's engineer ex-owner about 18 years ago but was driven very little before the car was placed in a shed and didn't see the light of day again until I bought it in 2003. The ex-owner died so I couldn't confirm any of this but I've done about 4,000 miles since and it has certainly been a reliable and strong little engine. It has the usual rear main oil leak but it's not something that would need to be fixed soon. I'm selling the complete block and head but not any of the ancillaries (eg, water pump, manifolds, starter motor, etc) and am not sure of what it's worth but will be happy to listen to offers/advice.

3. Bluemels Brooklands Steering Wheel - this is an original wheel and in excellent condition with a dark brown plastic rim. When I got it, the plastic was split in one or two areas and very dull so I restored it myself by filling the splits with fibreglass, sanding it down and then varnishing it with polyurethane product coloured with a wood stain. It's come up rather well but if you look really closely, you can probably see the repair (I'll take photos). I want to keep the MG centrepiece so just the wheel itself and boss is for sale. Again, I'm not sure of the value but somewhere in the region of $AUD 500 would probably make me happy.

Note that I live in Melbourne, Australia so freight costs on the supercharger and engine will be high for anyone not local. I can weigh the supercharger so that you can talk to your freight company about charges but I'm not sure what the engine weighs. I'm happy for anyone to come and inspect the items so, if you are from overseas but know someone in Melbourne who will help out, I'll give you my details in a private email. As I said, the engine is still in my car so is running and easily tested. Lastly, I will have photos available in the next day or two so if you want to see them, just let me know by email.

Sorry for the long message but I've tried to be as detailed as possible in my descriptions. Contact me off-list for more information.

Cheers,

Andrew Clayton

Randell,
A minor correction, Lucas distributor 40368A is for a LATE 1953 round hole
block TD and is held in place by the side mounted cotter bolt. This
distributor is shorter in the body length entering the block than TC
distributors 40048/40162. Depth from bottom of body to center of gear is 2
3/8" on the 40368 distributor. Depth from bottom of body to center of gear
is 2 5/8" on the 40048/40162 TC distributors. Therefore to use this 40368
distributor on a TC you should delete the micrometer adjustment assembly as
this asembly is 1/4" thick. So now how do you hold the distributor to the
block? Easiest way is to use a TD clamp ( 1/8" thick ) without the 1/8"
spacer ring ( also 1/8" thick ), but now the distributor drive gear is
running 1/8" high. Probably OK but there is a difference.

Bob,
You are correct. I screwed up. The real serial number on the distributor that I have for sale is 40162A. I don't know how that happened.
Thanks for the info. I didn't know that you could even use a late distributor in an early block.

Thanks,
