The downpipe from MPJG and XPAG exhaust is a larger diameter than the
tailpipe from the silencer (muffler). Why is this so? Would not the same
diameter tailpipe give better gas flow?....Bob.

The larger diameter pipe has to handle pulses of exhaust. Behind the
muffler, it is smoothed out somewhat so the pipe can be smaller for the same
flow. It's the law of gas flow. A larger diameter pipe may not help, and in
fact could hurt.

Another reason the tailpipe is smaller than the head pipe is that by the
time the gases have made it to the tailpipe, they are much cooler, and
the volume has shrunk accordingly.
