Huh. So that is why eurabia lets a US license to be used temporarily. 007

Headlamps

Post by D&J Edgar » Mon Oct 16, 2006 11:15 am

I was asked exactly where the rubber seal on the headlamps were to be
installed. I have seen the rubber ring mounted on the glass lens as well as
just on the reflector. Some say mounting the rubber on the the glass seals
the whole headlamp bucket whereas if mounted on the reflector it only seals
the reflector area. I have the 8 inch tripods on my TC so cannot give first
hand knowledge but when I dug out my original parts I made the following
observations.

The rubber has to be stretched to to get it on the glass lens while it fits
perfect on the reflector. While you can stretch the rubber over the glass,
once the rubber gets old it will break.

If you look at the cross section of the rubber it is a V shape and not a U
and which lends itself to fitting the reflector better that the wide edge of
the glass.

The glass lens has a locating notch on the bottom which would prevent a
complete rim to glass seal so I don t go along with sealing the bucket.
Additionally the bucket was never meant to be sealed. Those King of the
Road medallions are only snapped into place plus the wiring exits from the
bucket through a well vented threaded tube.

Looking at Mike Sherrells TCs Forever on page 57 and also the bottom of page
68, the glass protrudes through the lens somewhat. If rubber were between
glass and rim the glass would recede further back.

So my vote is that the rubber mounts on the reflector. I am well aware our
800 members will come up with different ideas and welcome the discussion.

this last weekend and it passed the test of staying dry and will be writing
up a report to post. It is amazing how the other leaks now become more
evident though. My next focus will be the leak from the speedo cable of
which Bill Traill gave me some hints.)

Well I have discovered one more factor in this headlamp rubber seal
question. The seal that came with my TC 39 years ago is a definite V in
shape while another member has one he bought from Moss that is more of a
channel in shape l_/

Mine definitely fits the reflector better while his definitely fits the
glass better.

Can anyone vouch for the correct original shape?

As I see it and the way it works on my TC the glass is held in place in
the rim with 5 or 6 spring clips. The reflector is ATTACHED to the
headlamp shell with the rubber seal. This means you can remove the glass
and rim to replace the bulb or polish the reflector without it falling
out of the shell.

At least this is one bit of trivia I don't need to worry about with my
EXU.

Polish the reflector! Oh my gawd...aren't we all trying to get that nice yellowed look in the headlamps? Seriously, how do you polish the reflectors without scratching them?

Actually Rick, I had my reflectors re-silvered about 18 months ago and
haven't had to re-polish them yet but when I do I will use a very soft
cloth and grandma's traditional 'silvo' polish which she used on the
family silver (don't know if you have that in the USA).

Headlamps

Hello,

Does anyone have details for fixing the lamps to the rims of the headlights?
A photo or two would be ideal.
