GENE IS RIGHT, JUST GO AHEAD AND BREAK THE GLASS. I HAVE RESTORED A COUPLE
OF SETS THIS WAY. THIS WORKS FINE AS THE ORIGINAL LENS IS FLAT ANYWAY. I
STILL PREFER SILVER TO CHROME OR NICKEL, NEITHER OF WHICH HAVE THE LUSTRE OF
SILVER.

I BELIEVE THE ORIGINAL NOMENCLATURE FOR THE LIGHT UNITS IS LUCAS PF770 WHICH
WOULD ALSO INDICATE THEY ARE NOT QUITE 8" IN DIAMETER AND THEREFORE DON'T
QUITE FIT PROPERLY IN THE LATER CAT'S EYE HEADLIGHT RIMS. FOR THE BEST FIT
TRY TO FIND THE EARLIER RIM FOR THE FLAT TC LENSES, AT LEAST IN MY EX[ERIENCE.

Hi Everyone..Whilst on the subject of TC Headlamps, has anyone got a MB148 headlamp for sale preferably in England but will pay for shipping from anywhere. I have a damaged one where the bonnet (Hood) side has been hitting it over the years, chrome is not important as I am having my Rad shell re chromed and I can get this done at the same time.
Many thanks..Fred TC1407

Fred:
Any good chromer should be able to repair it if the damage is no to
extensive.

headlamps

Post by Ray » Tue Jun 10, 2003 6:08 pm

Hello all,
I have a set of Lucas L140 headlights that are painted steel shells with
(sort of) clear lens and a fluted reflector. They are 8" in diameter. The
Lucas emblem is 7/8" diameter.
They are supposed to be from a pre-war MG.
I have pics if you like, but the question that I have is this: What were
they on originally?
Anyone know?
They are "original" ;-).....that is, worn.
Best,
Ray

As an educated guess, if they are bottom mounted, I would think they are
from a Morris 10. Austins used side mounts and as I recall they were
always chrome. The fluted reflector though is a mystery as the Morris 10
lights at least post war were the same internally as the TC , only the
shell was painted. Notwithstanding there were numerous other Brit car
makes that had many different headlamp configurations. Terry

Probably from a Morris car or commercial. The MG ones
were, I think, always the slightly lighter Brass shells, the "rest"
used the cheaper steel ones.

Clive
You are correct, The steel ones are moore durable but the bases are spot
welded to the shells, the brass ones were rivetted

Lessee if digitaldon kin get this straight (not easy)....................

Madhu sez: "But
the sealed beams are not allowed in Good old Europe."

however, one kin drive on the autobahn as fast as one's vehicle (Auto-Union?
Ferrari?) kin go...... 150-200 KPH or so?? Huh??? Is digitaldon missing
something here?

Hi Don,
Almost all new small cars with 1250 cc engine, like that size of our
TC, can drive now a days about 200 kM/h. So all those big cars with 3 or 5
litter engine displacement can really drive fast, 320 kM/h or more. But most
of them are electronically speed limited to 250 kM/h. We do have
comparatively less accidents in the Autobahn while driving fast and
concentrated.

The driving Licence test are very strict and driving schools will also cost
a fortune here. They had to drive in the night, drive in the rain/snow,
drive in the Autobahn and in the country road etc. Where as in US in so many
states you just pick up those documents with out much driving experience. We
consider those documents as a license to kill.

All those trucks and cars coming from the east Europe, very often with very
bad technical conditions are removed from the roads by the police for the
safety of other traffic participants.

Madhu
