G'day all:
Sorry to trouble you with this but on the TC's 60th. Anniversary toodle, today, ( actually my car is only 58 ) my speedometer decided to play silly-bugger. The mileage counter segment is working just fine, the cable is routed correctly and is not broken; and now the eccentricities begin.
The speedometer needle will:
1) sometimes work just fine;
2) sometimes stick at 0 MPH; then,
3) suddenly start to work fine again; then,
4) stick at 30 MPH.; and then, to really cap it all off,
5) madly spin all the way up and over, coming down to rest at six o'clock.
I can temporarily remedy things, once-in-a-while, by tapping but then the same old items, 1) to 5) above, renew themselves once more, and not always in the same order as written.
While this could be construed as being comical, at the same time, it is bloody annoying. Many thoughts have crossed my so called mind, ie: knackered mechanism, dirty internals, to name only two, so I should like to enquire, of the group, any suspected causes for this turmoil. And, as the court of last resort, should a rebuild be required, can it be done on the N.A. Continent?

Jack,
It's very likely that cleaning and re-oiling the bearings of the chronometrical instrument
will get it to work again. You can do this on your own, if you have a some knowledge about
chronometrical clock servicing. I clean it with a ultrasonic cleaner. You should only oil
the bearings and should not put oil on the teeth of the gears.
An excellent explanation how the speedometer works is in the article "Jaeger Chronometric
Instruments" by Carl N. Cederstrand. Carl was so friendly to allow publishing of this
article on my web site.
