Dear Lads & Lassies;
Just an addendum to the canister: I place oiled
steel wool around the vents to emulate the original concept.

Precisely! I followed Ray McCrary's instructions off the site, ordered
RC-4340 and it fitted like a glove. Also did what the Hon Thom Collins did
and inserted two donut shaped steel wool pads into the top end and it looks
authentic from the outside.

Fw: [mg-tabc] filter for air cleaner cannister

David,

Boy, I am really slow these days. You are referencing a filter element for
the original style air filter canister. I thought you were talking about
the pancake type filter. My apologies to all.

G'day all:

With respect to the thread at present I thought, and we all know what that
can do ( ?), I would be very brilliant and try and to go one step further. I
checked out and noted the specs. for the K&N, RC 4340, filter off the K&N
web-site. I then located an RC 3710 model and the specs. are as follows:.

K&N Filter Model # RC 3710:

Base Diameter (outside ): 4.5 inches (114 mm.); Top Diameter (outside): 4.5
inches (114 mm.)[ the only difference between the two]; Length : 5.0 inches
(127 mm.); Top: Metal ; Flange Length: 0.625 inches (16 mm.); Flange Angle:
0 degrees; Flange Offset: 0 inches (0 mm.).

The only noticeable shape differences, between the two, are due to the size
of the top, outside diameters. The RC 3710 is straight and round, whereas;
the RC 4340, is tapered and round.

My thought was that; the RC 3710 filter not being conical in shape, might
fill the repro-cannister a bit better than the RC 4340. The installation
procedure would be the same as that, detailed in the TABC/Org/Tech. section.
Well, surprise, surprise! I now have this lovely, new, filter (
non-returnable says the local NAPA outlet's manager ), which does not fit
into my repro-cannister? The reason, for this!, The OD! This confused me,
which is a simple enough thing to do these days. The specs. given, in the
above installation details, comply with the OD of the filter I have, the
length is the same, so what gives, eh? I then reckoned, if the one I have
does not work, it would be safe to surmise that a RC 4340 will not fit
either.

The only thing I suspect is that the ID, of the repro-cannisters, may vary.
It might be due to the different manufacturers, or even product runs. While
the amount of variance may be only of a small calibre, it seems it is enough
to cock-up the whole insertion operation. I rather tend to go with this
thought, as an easy out. My repro. unit was purchased, from Moss,
California, 1979-11-30. I am open to a solution on this one!

Just some more of my ramblings; cheers for now then:
Respectfully:
Jack Emdall, TC # 6768, New Westminster, B.C., Canada

Fwd: [mg-tabc] filter for air cleaner cannister

Post by Davidtasa@aol.com » Mon Sep 19, 2005 3:16 pm

Gentlemen,
I'm not sure what the confusion is about this thread. If you refer to the
website I included, you will see pictures of Ray McCrary's conversion which is
exactly what I have referred to. It should make it all very cear. Everything
works and fits perfectly! Thanks Ray!

David,

Thanks for graphically demonstrating that the K&N 4350 filter element nicely
fits the Original Air filter canister....NOT the pancake canister that some
of us have fitted.
