Transmission decision

Post by Terry Horlick » Fri Aug 05, 2005 5:34 pm

Hi, I'm the fellow who wrote in the "TC talking to me post. I had a little time tody to start pulling the tranny. Haven't decided if the engine comes out or the tranny just comes off the rear end. Anyway I got down far enough to get the shift tower off and look in there. Everything looks nice, but I did find a tooth in the oil diverter on the driver's side. See my photo at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/images/geartooth.jpg This means to me that whether or not the clutch has gone bad the tranny will need a full rebuild with some new gears. So I am at a decision point. Do I go for a full rebuild and have a reliable nice driving car. or do I go for a 5 speed transplant and have a reliable nice driving car which can more easily be repaired in the future. I am trying to wiegh the merits of an over-drive and easier fixes in future against originality. I now know I can go either way but haven't really talked to someone driving a 5 speed. Are there any 5 speeders out there who can weigh in with their experience? My car is not a show car, definitely not a concourse car. It is just a pretty car which is original except for a factory replacement engine, TA wheels, and a high speed crown and pinion. So originality doesn't weigh heavily on me. Any thoughts out there? Thanks, Terry TC2285

I was able to turn the transmission gears a bit and found several munched teeth on second gear. I guess there is no chance to have this mess fixed before my planned long weekend trip in two weeks! The car was being driven up a steepish pitch a block from home in second gear. I suspect the damage occurred under the hand of a previous owner and just checked out when it was under a large enough load in second gear.
