group, when you press a half shaft onto a hub , how far into the hub should i press the axil? i notice that at the end of the slots or groves cut into the axil that the depth of the groves begin to shallow in the last half to one quarter inch. is this what brings the press fit up to 6000 to 12000 lbs? because it is not very tight at all up to this point. thanks, charlie [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Charlie, length of TC axle is 21 7/16" from inner end of shaft to flat face of hub where the axle enters the hub. The axle shaft splines are too long. No, the 6000 to 12,700 lbs force is for the interference fit of the shaft to the hub along the parrallel section of the splines. If it is "not very tight" it is too loose and you are wasting your time. You need new parts, shaft, hub, or both. Charlie, as previously indicated, 6000 to 12,700 lbs press fit is the required amount. Loctite, welding, darning needles etc. are all temporary 'bodges" and will not work long term. You may need new tapered axle shafts and taper bore your hub for a permanent solution. Or a new tapered shaft and taper bored hub if your old wheel splines are worn below 2.440" ( 2.450" is NOS size ) . The axle and hub must act as a single component and no looseness or movement is allowed. Greg, I would say there is no tolerance given for wear at the spider gear end. I have never seen a TC rear axle with very severe wear on the inner end. Usually any wear is confined to the axle shafts as the gears are hardened. My new tapered axler shafts are a light push fit into the spider gears.
