MOT for UK tabc owners

Post by tony goodall » Sat Jun 25, 2005 3:48 am

Hi All I took TC 9825 for it's MOT yesterday (it passed) but the point of writing is to mention that the new computerised system is now in use and the guys at my local garage had an almighty job finding the car on the Swansea database - took about 3/4 of an hour of phoning and entering numbers before it was finally located. They (garage) told me that the VOSA computer will not accept four digit chassis numbers! So, you may need to have patience on your next MOT visit. Anyone else experienced this? The testing is also modified and contains centralised computer checks. I suggest you ensure that your MOT tester is well familiar with vehicles as old and older than ours. Tony TC9825

Had my MOT this morning and not aware that they were using a computer for MOTs in the garage and didn't seem to have a problem. Maybe they were going to put the info in the computer later in which case maybe they will have a problem and I will get a phone call. Found out that they had put the body number in instead of the chassis number last year, but they just changed it on the new one this time. (We passed). Regards Tim Miller TA0264

Tony, I got my TA and my TF MOT'd this month by the same father and son business I have used for the last 30 odd years. No computer, no link to DVLA, no problem. Maybe this modern technology has not caught up with them yet (their workshops still look like garages did in the 50's) I guess it's only a matter of time before they have to comply? Shouldn't the chassis number be 6 digits in your case - TC9825? Or if they can't enter in the letters maybe 009825 would work. When I had my TA MOT'd in May the garage showed me the computer they had installed. They said they had only been 'testbedding' the system and that the DVLA weren't happy with the system yet. Roger Muir TA1890 UK

Hi Tony, TC 2259 went for it`s mot a few weeks ago to a garage just like Alan`s in Sutton Coldfield...been there for years. All the blokes in there are ex-BMC mechanics and are shall we say sympathetic to the older motor, but I suppose like most things Europe will catch up with them and change the face of England a bit more....... Hello Roger, Hang on! Ministry? Bureaucrats? Dodgy computer systems? Seems to me you've all been there and done that! When I think more carefully about a computerized system for MOT's in the UK I am all for it. I see no reason why it should not be able to work. The other item that the DVLA should have is links to a car's insurance as well. Just imagine all those untaxed, non MOT'ed, non insured cars that could be detected by those automatic scanning vehicles that we now see at the road sides. Why should these people get away with this, we pay more insurance as a result, people are injured or their cars are damaged and because these cars aren't insured you can't get any recompense from the offending driver. Bring it on I say, catch these people and crush their cars, ban them, fine them, jail them, but get them off the road. For all of us that do obey the law these offenders shouldn't be on the road. They are compuerising everything over here in the UK, using security as a pretext. The idea is that automatic number plate recognition cameras will be able to check if you have tax, MOT or insurance, and send a summons within minutes; and all without human intervention!
