Re: [mg-tabc} steering boxes
I know that I am a great fan of the Datsun box, my TC has new springs ,new
hubs, new king pins and bushes and new stubs and bearings but the worms in
the 3 spare BC boxes I have are worn and the rocker arm shaft was worn oval,
the steering wheel hub on my TC when I bought it was held on by a bolt
fitted into a hole drilled through the steering column! I machined the shaft
and fitted new bushes and another column but the box was still not good
enough to pass our MOT out here. The sector arm shafts appear to be very
soft and as they are now 60 years old could be subject to fatigue taking
into account the forces applied to the shaft via the drop arm.If you have a
good BC box you are lucky but down here TC's were flogged hard on our rough
roads by the youth of the Late 40's early 50's which could possibly be the
cause of the wear in the box ,not taking into account the lack of
maintenance,by 1960 most TC,s down under were in a very sad condition.
I would like to try a VW box conversion as the ratio is closer to that of
the TC, The Western Australian TC owners all have the Daddo box conversion
and would drive their cars two to three times more often than the average
owner.
