alloy rocker cover

Post by John van den Boorn » Fri Jun 24, 2005 12:22 pm

Hello guys, I friend of my is desperately seeking for an original alloy rocker cover for his TC, with a quick release filler cap. I know it is hard to find and probably expensive, but if somebody has one for sale, please contact me off list. Greetings, John TA1434

hello John - your friend wants an original alli cover??? He might have more luck finding some rocking-horse droppings, or some hens' teeth, or how about a genuine unicorn horn ; - ))) There are plenty of abysmal repros out there (we had a thread on this just over a year ago) but those of us lucky enough to have original factory items, are keeping them where they belong!!! ocTagonally TCRoger John TA1434 asked:

Well, of course it will be very difficult to find one, maybe it is even impossible. But if you don't ask, you will never find out if somebody from the group has one and wants to sell it. The car for which the rocker cover is mentioned, is restored recently and is very original. The cover is a hard to find item which is still missing... --- In mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com, "Roger Furneaux" wrote:

hi John - your friend's TC might very well be "restored and very original" (I believe that the word which best describes such a statement is "oxymoron") but what is the engine number? Mike Sherrell, who is very rarely wrong on matters TC in "TCs Forever", states on p. 56 that the alloy rocker covers ran from XPAG 2020 (fitted to TC1399 - Mike guessed at TC1425, but he did not have access to the full factory build records) to XPAG 2965 (TC2268), or only 946 engines. Now as we all know by now, there is not a close relationship between chassis and engine numbers; thus XPAG 2966 was fitted to TC TC2403, 135 cars and nearly 7 weeks later!!! My TC0978 had XPAG 1629 and now has replacement XPAG/B45411, and sported its alloy rocker cover when I bought it in 1966. A quick flip through the database shows 47 TABC list members with engines in the range given by Mike, so I wonder if you all still have them? Happy MotorinG! TCRoger John van den Boorn wrote:

Hi Roger To answer your survey question I have TC1415 with XPAG2044. She sports an alloy rocker cover that I purchased from Skip Kelsey. He has them listed on his WEB page (www.shadetreemotors.com) for US$195. It seems odd that of the 946 engines built so many of them have lost their original covers. I can't imagine that owners would proactively discard the Alloy covers for the steel bread boxes. Greg Hoeft TC1415 XPAG2044 "Venerable Vernette"

Actually, many were used as valve cover racers over the years. Strong torsional rigidity, light weight and superior handling in the corners..... Best, Ray ;-)

Hi Greg, Did the cover you bought fit without any modification? I had heard that some covers had been cast from an original cover and due to the shrinkage that occurs that the rocker arms had clearance problems? Is that true, or just a fairy tale? Hi Chip The cover I received fit on the head and cleared the rockers without problems. However, it did require the hole for the air cleaner to be opened up to fit. There was no screen filter in filler spout and the pivot pins were simply some SS screws with nylok nuts. I replaced these with some clevis pins. It seems to me that the master used for the casting must have had the "rocker clearance tag" still attached when the mold was made so the reproduction needs to have the bump machined or filed flat so that a tag can be attached.
