Phoney Fuel Pumps etc.

Post by viv@trax.co.za » Wed Jun 22, 2005 7:26 am

Being young and innocent, I find it hard to understand why it is OK to throw out my SU pump which in fact is not a bad product but it's not OK to throw out my Bishop Cam steering box which we all know is not the best piece of engineering if not downright dangerous. For myself, I don't really care much but why don't the purists react like they do when the dreaded Datsun subject comes up? Come to think of it the same applies to Bob's and Roger's 1/2 shafts and seals etc. Let's face it we're a two-faced bunch aren't we! Cheers all Viv

Phoney Fuel Pumps etc.

Post by E.Worpe » Wed Jun 22, 2005 8:45 am

The Bishop's Cam steering box imparts a unique characteristic to the T-abc. Anything that does this, whether it's good or bad, seems to become sacrosanct. Many such unique aspects have resulted in the demise of either the car or driver or both, but as part of the special flavour of the car, they are often left to stand. The choice is yours, modify and live to be damned or leave well alone and hope for the best. Regards, Eric. -----Original Message----- Being young and innocent, I find it hard to understand why it is OK to throw out my SU pump which in fact is not a bad product but it's not OK to throw out my Bishop Cam steering box which we all know is not the best piece of engineering if not downright dangerous. And what, pray tell, is wrong with the Bishop Cam steering box? My car has one, and steers just fine. (I must confess that there's a Tompkins kit bolted on top, but it's otherwise as Mr. Bishop Cam designed and built it. Car goes straight, can be set up beautifully for a series of twisties on my favorite road, and gives me a good upper body workout when I have to park. I'm serious. These are vintage cars, which just happen to have been built after the war, and they provide a unique and very rewarding driving experience. If I want to drive a car with a VeeDub steering gear, I'll get an old Beetle. Likewise for a Datsun steering box. Long live the Bishop Cam, at the very heart of the TABCs! When it's blamed for things, it's either because the chassis, springs, bushings, etc. in the car are shot, or because it was not maintained properly! -Rick, TC 7881 "E.Worpe" E.Worpe@surrey.ac.uk> wrote: The Bishop's Cam steering box imparts a unique characteristic to the T-abc. This safety issue keeps coming up...But is there any record of anyone ever being killed in a TABC? Please don't tell me about the many near-misses we've heard about on this list (the word T-boned seems to come to mind), but who's exited that we know of? Frank Churchill, co-founder of the New England MG 'T' Register, was killed several years ago when he was T-Boned at an intersection. If I remember correctly he was in his TD at the time, not his TC. It had nothing to do with BC steering, non-SU fuel pumps, or any of the other strange directions this thread has taken, but since you mentioned "T-boned"... -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. John, I'm hoping to find the time to do a front end overhaul on TC0750 later this year, which will include fitting new stub axles (machined from EN24T), new kingpins and bushes, new road springs and poly bushes and rebuilding the Bishop Cam box with (hopefully) a new sector shaft and steering drop arm. This should make a few decent articles for "Totally T-Type" (the bi-monthly magazine of the 'T' Register of the MG Car Club). Hi John. That all sounds expensive. Did you have the originals crack tested or are you just erring on the side of prudence? Ian Thomson. ----------- --- John James jj@octagon.fsbusiness.co.uk> wrote:

Hello Ian, Yes, it is expensive, (the stub axles were 500 for the pair) but what price safety? The new sector shaft and drop arm just seem common sense if the steering box is going to be rebuilt. Hopefully the worm is going to be OK!
