TC Supercharger Carburetor help

Post by Terry Horlick » Sun Jun 19, 2005 8:43 pm

I am currently working on fitting up an Italmechanica Roots style supercharger to my TC (TC 2285). Tonight I did a trial fit-up and ran into a snag. The carburetor I selected doesn't fit under the bonnet! I have posted three photos: first is one with the stock set-up 1.25" carbys at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/images/sc1.jpg second is the fit up of the supercharger at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/images/sc2.jpg third is another view at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/images/sc1.jpg The problem is that these SU carbies from a Datsun 240Z are 2" too tall for the installation. This leaves me with three options. First, I could get a different carby. Second, I can cast a new intake manifold to run from the carby to the supercharger to move the carby lower. Or third, I can sell the unit to someone who also wants it and has a better solution. Casting a manifold is a large bother because I would not only have to make a pattern for the manifold, but also make up a core. The advantage is that I can use any carby I want then. Switching to another carby will mean not using an SU which changes the ambience of the engine compartment (so what?). So what I need to hear is ideas on what carburetors will fit in that space, work off the TC controls and run the car well. Does anyone out there have experience with this? Thanks, Terry TC2285

One more question I forgot to ask. This unit comes with a spot to plumb in oil pulled off the pressurized oil lines on the engine. The unit has been retrofitted with 5 sealed ball bearing assemblies in place of the original open ball bearings. The oil line will fill the front and bathe the gears, but the front also has a fill plug so this can be done manually. The rear bearings used to have caps over them with grease fittings. Are modern sealed bearings really ok to run with no lubrication? I am thinking of placing a plug over each rear bearing and not running pressurized oil to the front end. If I do run the pressurized oil line to the front won't I have to run another line out of the front to the sump (the Supercharger is already set up with an oil fitting for oil return about midway up the gear case). Next question is where is it best to tap into the intake manifold between the sc unit and the head for the pressure gauge? I have a case bolt which is drilled through to the output port of the SC so If I ran a hollow bolt there I could attach the gauge there and not have to drill the manifold. Terry I think your problem stems from the fact that Italmechanica /SCOTT did not use an SU carb, but a big side draught Solex, using the SU wants to put the dome through the bonnet. If I remember from old ads I have seen the inlet manifold comes from the to of the blower and sort of snakes down the back. Where country are you located maybe I can help Joe Curto [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
