Group- Here is a good one for conversation and the 'all knowing'. I pulled out my first TC that has been in storage for 35+ years, a later 49, 99% original (as I know it), one owner. The generator has an oval Lucas brass tag marked 'special equipment'. Numbers are C45NV 228331 DA-31 4/49. My local repair shop guy (former authorized Lucas dealer) said he has never seen such an animal. My thought is, it was for a farm tractor or off road piece of equipment !! My Lucas book does not list that number, can anyone point me in the right direction ? THANKS

Re: TC Generator Identification
My Jaguar 1954 XK120SE is original equipment and has the following markings
on the Lucas oval brass tag: "Special Equipment C45PVS/5 224562B GC-51 4/54"
I was always under the impression that the 'P' following the CV45 meant
positive ground, but I am not sure about this. I am pretty sure the 224562B
mark is the serial number. Certainly the 4/54 mark is the date of
manufacture.

Re: TC Generator Identification
Mick,
I don't know any more than you do on this. Don't know if this is any
help or just confuses the issue but a UK Morgan owner came up with this
list trying to find the correct equipment for is Series I Morgan 4/4:
Lucas part number codes:
Armstrong Siddeley = C
Austin = BN
Bedford = P
BSA = AC
Citroen = CJ
Commer = DC
Daimler = BS
Dodge = GF
Hillman = S
Humber = T
Jowett = AJ
Karrier = DC
Lanchester = M
MG = DA
Morris = A
Riley = CH
Rover = G
SInger = BP
SS = V, GC
Standard = V
Talbot = BQ
Triumph = X
Vauxhall = P
Wolseley = AA
This is for prewar stuff and I couldn't find any correlation with my TC
generator number. I would suspect that the 4/49 indicates a April 49
build date so I don't know if there is even any relevance.
Regards,
Charles Hill

Re: TC Generator Identification
Mick,
My Lucas Master Catalogue #400D EX indicates 228331 is a generator for a
1939 MG Midget. Superceded by 22452 which was the post war TC generator.
Parts appear to be interchangeable between the two.

Re: TC Generator Identification
Mick is that a 3 brush generator? it may well be as the P/N as Bob G says is
for a 39 Midget aka MGTB and I just rebuilt a TB unit owned by Henry Gurly
of this list which also had the special equipment tag, but the date code
appears correct for a 49 car.
