New TA owner questions Tompkins Steering kit

Post by drh6242 » Tue May 31, 2005 6:58 am

Just bought TA 1560. Its rather fully restored but there is some 6-8 inches of slop in steering wheel. I understand that its steering was rebuilt some years ago- and very little mileage since then. Anybody have experience with this device? Might it help?

The Tompkin kit MAY help the steering, but probably the main problem is too many shims under the box top cover. Removing shims places the sector shaft peg closer to the worm gear and therefore should reduce steering wheel free play. You may have other problems. I can supply the Tompkins kit. As a general comment, please include your name and location in emails to T-ABCs. Bob, Does the TA box also have shims at the end plate? If so, he may also need to make sure the sector peg is "centered" in the box. _Peter
