This Rain-X thread was run a couple years back when Badger was active here. He claimed just rubbing a raw potato cut in half over the windscreen worked just as well. I've never tried it though. David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

Hi Murray, Good to hear about the rain. Now you will have cooler thoughts. Here with us it is too cold for the time, almost freezing in the night. So my mind is freezing. Poor people living in the country side had different option. If you can get a potato cut in the middle and wipe the windshield glass with it. It will help for a while. You may do the same with a cut onions as well. Have a nice day. Mai 2005 03:14 Group, Have just had the pleasure of a long drive in the rain. Not something one has to contend with much in this part of the world fortunately. My wipers are pretty hopless. Now I accept that at best they will be pretty useless in heavey rain due to their design. Hence my question........ Have anyone out there managed to modify their wipers to improve performance. I should add that mine are in top condition with a NOS motor recently fitted. All fittings and blades are in top shape. Cheers - Murray Arundell Soaking in Aus..... On a more modern note and one I have found works well is to scrub the windshield and the wiper blades with Ajax cleanser or perhaps Bon Ami. It works well on the Ferrari and also the TC. It seems to rejuvenate worn wiper blades but it is not as good as just replacing the blade. An old wife's tale says that Coca-Cola will also do it, but I have never tried. Be careful with the Ajax, on the windshield itself as it is abrasive - a mild abrasive but abrasive non the less. Not sure of the Bon Ami but I would suspect that as well. David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

I would agree that rainex works when moving and on a front screen but it can be less than useful on steeply raked rear screen like the BGT has. Here the beads don't run off properly and dry on the glass leaving distracting dirty circles in the dry. Also, as it is, I believe, silicon based, it can cause problems when repainting the bodywork (should it need it). Ian Thomson. -------

There's nothing modern about that. In the US, the use of Bon Ami scouring powder to clean windshields goes back to the early days of the automobile. My mother and her siblings had to do it daily to the windshield on my grandfather's Ford Model T. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. TC TC6710 XPAG7430 NEMGTR #2271 Cub Hill, Maryland fold@bcpl.net

Ajax uses sand; Bon Ami uses something softer, hence the slogan "Never scratched and never will". Best, Ray "Morology is our profession, our ONLY profession!"

Murray, The solution is Rainex. You wipe it on the windscreen and rain just beads up and runs off. Have driven through the tail end of a hurrican with out visibility problems. Jim

Bon Ami, since 1886, slogan is "HASN'T SCRATCHED YET" with a chick coming out of its shell. I use it all the time. Craig Seabrook

The "something softer" used as an abrasive in Bon Ami is feldspar. BMW recommends Bon Ami for cleaning windshields, and NASA uses it on the space shuttle.
