Hello and what have I gotten into?

Post by Pavone, John (Corporate) » Tue May 03, 2005 7:55 am

I just bought a 47' TC and am in the process of checking stuff out before really using it. Cosmetically, it's very nice but mechanically, it's a mess! The front axle was in backward and now that it's out, it appears to have a pretty good bend in it. More importantly, the frame seems a bit bent; the left side frame openings for the front spring are too close by 1/4". Has anybody attempted frame straightening without taking the entire car apart? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, John TC2797

Hi John, Seems that the curved sweep of the chassis over the front axle has been pushed in. You may find a dimple or kink in the underside of the chassis near the bump-stop rubber support flange. It may be possible to partly correct the bent chassis by using an hydraulic ram attached to the chassis by way of the spring mounting points. This would need some fabricated brackets to enable the ram to apply the straightening force. You may need to consider welding a strip of steel on the underside of the chassis afterwards to prevent any fractures in the area of the buckle. Hopefully, someone will suggest a specialist near you who might undertake such work. I've tried it myself, and whilst it's possible, some previous experience in chassis work would be of real benefit. Regards, Eric. -----Original Message----- More importantly, the frame seems a bit bent; the left side frame openings for the front spring are too close by 1/4". Bud, I'm in Stamford Connecticut. The axle isn't a big deal as it's already out and can be taken to a specialist for straightening. The frame is a big deal, as I didn't plan on taking the car apart so soon! Best regards, John TC2797
