Morris minor pumpkin

My TC crownwheel broke a tooth and I decided to purchase a Morris Minor pumpkin since that has a better ratio (so I don't get that feeling all the time to switch to my non-existant 5th gear) and is also a lot less $$$ then to buy a TC Crown & Pinion. Everything fits and I'm ready to bolt the whole gizmo together but encountered a slight problem. There is no oil fill opening in the Morris Minor pumpkin like the TC pumpkin has!!! Apparently the rear axle oil fill is done in the housing from a Morris. Anybody encountered this problem? What can be done to solve this? Drill a hole in the top of the TC housing and close it with a cork?? It appears the material is too thin to tap a thread in it...... Any suggestion is more then welcome... Josh, I have one of the Morris 1000 mods. done by John Bowles of the TC Owners Club of Western Australia, the same remarkable engineer that does the Datsun steering gearbox mod to fit our TCs. John and Harry Pyle's solution is to take a 1/2 inch 90 degree street elboe from your hardware plumbing department, insert that and it will serve as the fill level and sure does ease the filling. Harry instructed me to file off some from the flange at the opening to allow one to turn in the piece. I found if you cut off the ring at the top it is easier for clearance, rather than filing. You might use a 1/2 standard plug with the proud top rather than the recessed plug from the Morris diff, which will ease tightening and removal of the plug. I also filled some flats on the side of the elboe to get wrench purchase. Leave it to those 'blokes' from OZ ! Cheers! Bill Hentzen Mequon Wisconsin

Rick, excuse this inept vintage mind and allow me to try again. The Bowles Morris pumpkin has a plug on the side that is the fill and level indicator. Our TC has a fill elbow and a plug on the other side that is the messy level indicator. The elbow described just screws into that Morris level plug opening replacing that plug and allows one to fill the dif without some 90 degree funnel, and still serves as the level indicator. Turn in the elbow and it is vertical and sits proud to add the oil. Hope this helps to understand, but please realize I only got a certificate of time from the U of Wisconsin and if this Buckey Badger can better explain, please give me a call @ 262 241 4445. Bill, Except that not ALL Morris Diffs have the fill plug. Some filled from the rear of the housing. G'day Bill, Just to muddy the water... it gets increasingly more confusing when you start to fiddle with vegetables other than the Morry pumpkin. i.e. Spridget 4.2 centres... or the whole tribe of alternative BMC diff centres, each offering a bewildering array of ratios. This is good stuff if you have the puff. OP Police, please leave right now. It's a dream come true for those of a mathematical persuasion, what with available wheels ranging from 19" cheese-cutters, through 16" - 15" - even 13". But back to the point: I'm running a 'pumpkin', aluminium housing, with a square-drive fillerplug on the R/H side. I'm lucky... just fill till it spills. Some of the other diff centres on the bench have no filler plugs. A check on the diff housing of the donor vehicle of these units reveals in most cases a plug on the rear of the actual diff housing ala MGB. In this case, maybe it's a case of using the relevant fill info for that particular model.... and placing all faith in the wheel hubs ability to retain the goods. Gee... it must be boring for those who merely consult the standard chart. Give me variety .... it's so 'different' "Reddo" PS.
