Hi Bill, Our PA (0251) still has the dipping solenoid. As well as the reflector deflecting function, the solenoid also actuated a switch which turned the right hand headlight off when the lights were dipped. The origianal wiring for the right hand headlamp went back down the wing support, across the tube under the radiator and up the right hand wing support. The wire from the dip switch only actuated the solenoid. My TA was like that when I bought it in 1961, but I converted it to double dipping because I think the single dipping was outlawed in England (where I lived then) about that time. The wiring required was not trivial. My previous Morris 8 was also like that, but the solenoid operated on 6 volts only. That's when most original headlights got junked (including mine) and the 7 inch adapters became available to take the pre-focus integrated glass & reflector. We used to "modernize" our TC's back then. Converting a TC to double dipping just required an extra wire to be routed from the left headlight to the right. "just"!!! Ususally down the outside of the wing stay tube. I think that legislation that required two rear lights at a minimum distance from the outside of the car came a little earlier. That's why most MG's prior to the TD had two aftermarket (often Lucas) lights grafted onto the rear wings and the original D light weas junked in favour of the number plate illuminating lamp like that found on a TD. The addition of another D lamp on the left of the number plate did not satisfy the legislation. All this legislation compliance started to be enforced when the "10 year test" or MOT, the equivalent of an annual safety inspection, was initiated in 1960, if I remember correctly. It spelled doom to many exotic pre-war cars in the hands of impecunious students and a plunge in prices of used cars over 10 years old. Oops, rambling again. Peter Ross TC 8892 Bolton, Massachusetts

I thought the TC was the beginning of "official" MG importation. Before this, there were a few M-types, and surely others, imported privately. I owned a '36 TA that had been imported new, but by the owner. I don't know about other States, but the headlights on the "D" type was legal in Tennessee just post-war. I have seen the papers showing this sort of thing, when cars were brought back from England by GI's. Each State frequently had different regs for cars in the late 20's early 30's, and even some major cities got into the act. Remember, this was just about the time when the sealed beam was institutionalized by Congress under political pressure by sealed-beam light manufacturers - this is why the US was still using crappy sealed beams LONG after the rest of the world had switched to the replaceable bulbs with much brighter halogen type lamps. I don't think MG would have built special "American spec" cars when they were only sending a half dozen units per year over via private owners. I would be willing to bet that the cars that now have the TC type double dippers, as well as the sealed beam conversions were all done by owners post-manufacture in order to get more light at night, or to comply with local ordinances. It occurs to me that the headlamp swap-o-ramas may have happened becuase of the spare parts problems with the early cars in the late 40's-80's. When Moss first started, even TD parts really could not be had from dealers....... Best, Ray "Morology is our profession, our ONLY profession!"
