Re: AW: [mg-tabc] OIL SUMP - What happens to the extra pint that I
The metric system is useless!
A measuring system, is, after all, just a way of comparing an object to a standard.
The metric system utilizes the metre for length. Well, a metre is too long for most objects, and a millimetre is far too small. On the other hand, the foot and the inch are easily compared to most things.
Further, a man can easily pace, with accuracy, a yard, but the same cannot be said for the metre.
The inch, by clever design, happens to be about the width of your thumb, and the foot, something akin to the length of your foot. Show me where you can find such logical comparisons for the metric system
In Canada, we went metric about 30 years ago. A large percentage of the citizens routinely speak of imperial units in daily conversation, showing just how relevant and useful the imperial system is.
Finally, the argument is often made that metric units are usually multiples of 1000, and thus, can be easily worked in arithmetic. So what? We all have calculators now.
Our MGs were designed for miles, most of the non-engine chassis design is in imperial units. Let's keep it that way.

Of course, we're too smart to ever fall for something like that in Canada.
First we got the metric system, and the bastards sold us 4 litres for the
price of an Imperial gallon (plus a markup for the cost of the changeover).
Then we got free trade with the U.S., THEN the b's switched to the U.S.
gallons and quarts, which are smaller yet!
It's almost enough to make you join up with the NRA, and lobby parliament
for an armed citizenry!!

The government tried to force conversion some years ago......
No one could figure out just how far a distance of "300 meters" really was
when confronted with it on a highway sign....and after a LOT of griping, the
metric signs just....................went away.

Dear Ray,
I can only compare this to the French attempt to convert "
DOS " to French language. You know the result.

That would be under the "ministry of culture" and the attempt to stem the
flow of Enlish language and Americanisms into the French language! I read
of this..it was a real rib-hugger!

In Montreal, Canada, where the language police constantly try to outdo the KGB in the days of Josef Stalin, it is not unusual to hear such phrases as "le flat tyre", or "le engine hood".
Meantime, the friendly local Quebec government refuses to put up road signs that have any English in them at all. God help you if you're from New York and you can't read the "Les kids playing on Le Road" sign.
Guess it's just "le politics".
