Re: Steering wheel hub
Hi, guys and gals...
Been reading the summaries of the growing membership. Good job, Jim and
Walter!
Anybody out there have a usable steering wheel hub with decent splines?
The friction between my gut and the Brooklands wheel makes it harder to
turn than a Bishop box with sand in it. I want to mount a smaller wheel
so I can at least get into the EXU without vaseline, but keep the
Broooklands intact. Finish, appearance no problem... I can machine or
weld, but would rather avoid broaching splines. Please send price, etc.
off list.
I know this belongs in the classifieds, but just wanted to say hello to
all of you too.
Best to all...

Re: Steering wheel hub
Dear Austin:
Good to see your note.
I have many splines that were made for my VW/Bishop
conversions. You would have to cut off the old spline and weld the new one to
the driving shaft.
The new spline is about 8and1/4inches long and the
splined portion is about 4and 3/16. There is a 1inch deep tube drilled into
the base which fits over the driving shaft. I paid the machine shop $125
for each unit. Each spline was physically checked out on the Brooklands steering
wheel for correct fit
I would be pleased to send this to you to try it
out. If it works you can send me $65.
Tally Ho!

Re: Steering wheel hub
I have also had many of these splined sections made here in England, all
shipped to Germany for Dieter Wagner to fit onto his VW steering box
conversions, and they cost considerably less than $125 (abt. 66 GBP), so if
anybody wants one, let me know. I would however be extremely wary of
welding: they were originally pinned, and this is what Dieter does, with the
improvement of modern "roll pins".
As an aside, I was told many years ago by the old machinist who did a lot of
work for Jerry Goguen, that they were copper-plated to prevent corrosion and
make adjustment easier. Anyone know for sure if this was the case (original
water pump shafts certainly were copper plated)?

Re: Steering wheel hub
Hi, all...
Gotta tell you what a great group this is! Within hours of my posting
my request for a spare steering wheel hub, I had four offers, and
Richard Fritz, who responded first, went ahead and packed up and shipped
a beautifully cleaned up and polished hub to me before he even got my
check.
I want to thank Richard publicly, and express my thanks to the entire
"list" for being so willing to share information and help so graciously.
As an early member (I think I was number 33, thanks to Bob Grunau), I'm
delighted to have remained a part of it, and to encourage the newer
members to take advantage of the really outstanding resources that
MG-TABC represents. It ain't just the great cars.

Re: Steering wheel hub
Let me second all that, but to mention member Hugh Pite, (still freezing up
in Canada) who helped me out with the Difusa lenses that I stupidly allowed
to be crushed in their oh-so-carefully-packed box under a guys' truck.
This list will help!!
Now if only you could all help me remember what I did with a spare steering
column I packed away that I cannot find!
Best,
Ray

Steering wheel hub
Picked up a Nardi 4 spoke steering wheel frame at Bronte (
http://www.niagarabritishcarclub.org/bronte05/bronte05.html ) last
weekend, and am looking for a TD hub to have machined to fit (any
wrecked TD steering wheel or hub)?
Also looking for a license plate bracket "clamp"?
