NON-TABC - MGA AIR INTAKE BOX

Post by Joe Gates » Sun Apr 17, 2005 1:30 pm

I am wanting to design and fit an air intake box to the SU carbs of my '57 Coupe in lieu of the current pancake filters. I also intend the box to be fed by the present air hose. Can any lister offer advice as regards this modification, particularly recommendations relating to a suitable air filter and box dimensions? Joe, You may have more luck with this question at www.mgcars.org.uk. They have a fairly large MGA technical BBS. This group is almost entirely devoted to T types. Regards Aubrey

Joe, You might check Austin-Healey resources. One of the modifications from standard on the 100M was a cold air box and ducting. The carb spacing on the Healey air box would be wrong for an MGA, but you could get an idea of the setup. BTW, one of my irritations with British cars is that every 100-4 you see is a 100M. Funny how all of them have a louvered hood(bonnet) but none of them that I've seen have alfin brake drums, the cold air box or any of the other 100M equipment. Regards, Charles Hill Joe Gates wrote:

Hi Charles,Joe, Yes all 100 series Healeys seem to be "M"s. (I don't like the use of the term 100-4), However Alfin drums is not a requirement for the M. Cold air-box is silly for a street driven car, as most wouldn't include an air filter. I'm no expert on road conditions in S. Africa, but any sand wouldn't be welcome in my engine.
