My manual says that I need to remove the clutch and brake pedals as well as
the steering "muff" in order to remove the engine. Can this be true? It
appears that the engine will clear the frame and wings to this inexperienced

Hi Tom,
If you are removing only the engine you do not have to remove the
clutch and brake pedals. Remove the bonnet, silencer, SU pump connections,
electrical connections and the front parts like radiator etc. will make it
easier to lift and pull the engine out.
If you are removing engine and gearbox together, then you had to remove the
pedal board, clutch connections may be the gear liver. One can also remove
the gear box top cover. There are three ball and springs holding the shafts
in position. These may come out while removing the gear box cover.
My experience is only by assembling the TC 0448. Dismantling was so fast I
do not remember any thing. May be some body with more experience will advise
you.

Tom,
If you are only removing the engine you don't need to pull the pedals.
Don't know what you mean by steering "muff." If you mean the rubber
boot at the firewall, you don't need to remove it either. You do need
to remove these items to take out the foot ramp to pull the engine and
gearbox together. You may be able to pull the foot ramp without pulling
the pedals if you don't mind bending it a bit. I didn't want to bend up
the foot ramp and take a chance in not getting it back in right.

Tom,
With some careful manuvering, you do not need to remove the footwell to pull
the engine. The trick is to loosen the tranny mounts in place and jack up
the tranny just a little. As pressure on the tranny mount is relieved,
remove the mounts. Now lower the tranny and pull the engine foward and out.
Refit in the same fashion.
