In the original TC steering box, does the sector shaft arm bear on a plain mild steel top plate, or is the top plate case hardened or made from a higher strength steel? David Cameron

Hi David, Last year I opened the original steering box for cleaning. I saw very small grove or markings on the top plate. I think it was not any special steel. One way to confirm this is to apply a small file on the surface with out pressure. The mild steel and the hardened steel will behave different by doing so. I found that trying to force the peg downward into the worm gear from the top side is not the answer to eliminating excess steering play in that the three point connected top plate only bows upward at the center when downward pressure is applied, this also holds true for the Thompson Kit. A better solution for myself was to take up all the slack plus a couple of thou twixt the steering arm and the cotter pin hole with a washer of needed thickness. David, My steering box has a hardened steel plate. Whether this is original or not I don,t know, however I suspect there may have occured a change from soft steel before the war to hardened after the war, but it is just a guess. Thanks to those who replied regarding the top plate. Does anyone know if the Moss part, 260-100, is also hardened? The price seems rather low, as TC parts go. David Cameron
