Re: Digest Number 2059
Hi all,
Most interesting thread on towing a T Type. Had toyed with the idea
myself as would like to take the TB to Goodwood this year, but had'nt
figured on the legalities. It is a long drag from N.Yorks to Sussex! Had
thought of putting it on a trailer behind the LandRover but that would be
even slower. Could always put a tow bar on the good wifes Z3, well maybe
not.

Ron Benson

Thanks Kevin for your `final word` as it were, and indeed to everyone that
commented on the `towing frame` idea, it`s very interesting to hear all the
pro`s and con`s...especially from you guys in the `land of the free`!!!...
but as I suspected, the practice is deemed illegal here by some faceless
Eurocrat..... seems a shame that my brother-in-law and myself wasted an
afternoon in the pub discussing the design....but hey ho!...so I guess it`s
back to the caravan chassis plan.......suitably braced and strengthened I
hasten to add....not quite so easy to store as a frame, but when the devil
pees on your stawberries.....etc..etc...
Thanks again all of you............Tweed TC2259 ......
Carl, I have`nt forgotten about the 144 gearbox installation...can`t get to
the stored items yet.... look forward to perhaps meeting you on your trip
here...

Hello Murray,
But the funny thing is, it really does seem like a long way over
there. I remember my father driving us all from Northants to
Devon and Cornwall in the family tumbril back in the dark days
and we used to take two days! For a what, say, three hundred
mile trip?

AW: [mg-tabc] Digest Number 2059
Hi David,
My sweet (?) remembrance is driving an Austin seven Ruby (
1936) from Calicut to Alleppy a distance of 300 kM in about 48 hours. There
was two river to cross. One was with a motor ferry, the waiting time was
more than four hours. The other one was a small wooden platform placed above
two small wooden boats and tied with rope and pushed forward manually by
bamboo stick to cross the Aluva Periyar river. While my father was driving
the car on to the platform I use to close my eyes. I never wanted to see the
car falling in to the water. Both places we do have brides since late 1950's
.These are some old pictures you can not erase from your memory even after
53 years.
Last month I did the same distance in less than six hours. In Germany you
can cover the same distance in less than three hours. That is the third
world !!!!
I do not know how long a TC needs for the same distance?

Ah!
But remember the Great Northern Highway that could whisk you to Scotland
from London quickly?!?!
Of course, then you had to get off onto the Scots' roads, and grope your way
along with few signs!
But the scenary was wonderful, the folks seemed friendly (even when we
couldn't understand them) and it was a grand adventure!
At least for a 12 year old American boy!
Best regards,
Ray

Hello Ray,
You never fail to astonish! You mean you know the Great North
Road! Many a fog-bound mile I've trundled up and down that thing
from temporary exile in the East Midlands up to the ancestral pile
in Yorkshire! I hear the Eurocrats have legislated it to become
a Motorway and have thus stricken off much of the charm! An
interesting challenge for those so inclined is to try to follow
the ORIGINAL GNR aka the A639 - a coach and horses road - from
the site of the old General Post Office in London to York,
passing through all the old coaching towns, Huntingdon,
Peterborough, Stamford (a dead giveaway is a REALLY wide main
street , wide enough to turn a coach and four around), but there,
you've got me rambling and majorly off-topic AGAIN!
All the best, David Lodge

Re: Digest Number 2059
Hi guys, just another little tug on the `Great North Road` thread....I first started to travel this way back in the mid 60`s when I cut loose from Mum`s apron strings in Bishops Stortford Herts, and got a job in Darlington Co. Durham...and for all our listers across the waves, the `h` is silent...( like the `p` in bath )...and the `u` is short.
It was a lovely journey when I look back on it, possibly because there was`nt the fixation with speed then....and I don`t mean mph. As you say David, it passed through many lovely old towns even then... interesting about the Eurocrats deciding to change it to Motorway status...does that mean we shall then have two M1`s...

Hello Liz (or is it Tweed?)
Yes indeed! Ages after I moved "dahn Sarf", I attended a wedding
reception in the Old Bell Inn at Barnby Moor, one of the old coach
stops in what was highwayman territory between Newark and
Retford. And evidently those ghastly Eurocrats have decreed it
be named the "A1(M)" Yet I have to admit I still get a lump in
my throat to this day when I see the signs which simply say "The
North".

Re: Digest Number 2059
But this is a forum about cars, not roads unless the cars are on the roads.

Hello Liz (or is it Tweed?)
Yes indeed! Ages after I moved "dahn Sarf", I attended a wedding
reception in the Old Bell Inn at Barnby Moor, one of the old coach
stops in what was highwayman territory between Newark and
Retford. And evidently those ghastly Eurocrats have decreed it
be named the "A1(M)" Yet I have to admit I still get a lump in
my throat to this day when I see the signs which simply say "The
North".
Regards, David Lodge
