In the early days, detergent oil was not well accepted. Cars, even those in good condition, lost/burned as much as a quart every 3000 miles. I knew a couple of guys who drained the oil, then ran a gallon of kerosene into the sump and cranked the engine over a few turns with the coil wire disconnected to slosh the kerosene around and loosen up the sludge. When the kerosene was drained, it was as black as tar. Fresh oil was added and the kerosene evaporated away as it heated.

Yeah. Perhaps I should give him the benefit of the doubt. And what do I know? I have cars that are over 50. Fred TC1353 -----Original Message----- From: Chip Old [mailto:fold@bcpl.net] Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 9:23 AM To: MG-TABC Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] Castrol Enquiry

Or maybe the old guy was just one of those people who believes the "This is the oil it was designed to run on" argument. I still hear that every now and then from people who are otherwise quite sensible. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. TC TC6710 XPAG7430 NEMGTR #2271 Cub Hill, Maryland fold@bcpl.net Yahoo! Groups Links

Actually fellows the most important information needed is on the container, all those codes mean something so while we all like Castrol here in the USA (no Duckhams here) There is probably more of a sentimental thing going on. Joe [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

He was an old timer who thought the pinnacle of oil technology was 1952, and he serviced at least 6 cars I worked on, pretty much MGB's and TR6's so you know these cars came from the factory with HD oil in them. Joe [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

hi guys - talking about oils and codes on the container, does anyone know what they all mean? can we work out the amount of detergent from them? perhaps another call to Castrol... the mention of Merit being discontinued is a shame, since I only discovered it last year, very cheap in B & Q, but perhaps there is still some on the shelves. memo to you Brits - go out tomorrow and buy all you can! ocTagonally TCRoger Actually fellows the most important information needed is on the container,

Roger, Some of the codes on the oil containers are described in the article "Tribology" by A. J. S. Skinner, which is on http://www.mg-tabc.org/t-list-gall-07.htm Regards from Winter-Wonder-World Peter Forstner Germany - Munich
