Door Latch pull

Occasionally, my memory dredges up long-forgotten muscle memories. Recently, I was treated to a recall of driving my ’52 TD right out of college. The memory was about a cord pull somehow attached to the inside of the door and running to the latch pull. To open the door, all I had to do was lean my elbow on the cord and the latch would release.

 

Does anyone remember these?  Or has my dotage conjured another fantasy?

Quite sure it was on my TD….if it ever was…..

 

Which raises the question: Why do the latch handles have a marble?  Ah, perhaps to accommodate the loop of the latch pull cord!

Owning an MG T-series in the 50s meant you had access to dozens of accessories, some wonderful, some not, that various entrepreneurs thought the MG world wanted. In the States we would await the catalogs from MG Mitten or Vilem B. Haan to see the latest trinket to show off at the next Sports Car Club outing. Kinda like the Harley Davidson experience is today. The ONLY reason you drove a stock T-Series MG in the 50s was - you were driving your mother's car. Sounds like Dan Harmer has the answer.  The PO of my ’52 TD probably had a subscription to MG Mitten and saw an advertisement for a pull.

 

Now, does anyone have a source today?

If I remember this pulls correctly they were a simple light duty chain with a flat fitting to allow the chain to be secured at the non latch end with a wood screw. The other end had a split circle clip that went over the knob. All the chain was hidden by a tube made from naugahyde that matched the interior of the car. A few minutes at the hardware store looking for appropriate fittings and the services of your favorite trim shop should  allow you to re-create the pulls for your car.
